ROMAN CAMP (Supposed) [Carminnow] | Roman Camp (Supposed) Roman Camp (Supposed) |
James Ballantine Thomas Barbour Esqr. |
009 | An ancient encampment nearly of a square shape, on the farm of Carminnow and situated In the Western Margin of the "Water of Deugh" it is surrounded on all side, but the S. [South] East, by a double fosse, and a rampart composed of Earth and Stone, that on the S. [South] East side is naturally defended by the "Water of Deugh" which here runs with great rapidity through a frightful looking ravine. Mr James Ballantine who is an intelligent man of about 60 years of age during which time he has been living in the locallity, says that he always understood it to be a Roman Camp, beyond this information nothing further can be gleaned in this locality respecting it. |
