Thank you kindly for your input and advice. Have made corrections. Uncertain if "Meikle" is accurate with a k in it. Yep, the k is fine. Cheers Nora.
Hi mcgwill,
Thanks for reading them. Just continue in one column for the index, ignore format of the book ie the three colums. Yes it is a 8 on its side, you will see that a lot, and it is Frenchman, also Ross is just an ss not a j.
There are some groups that wont let you link from the bottom of the page. Techies are also working on that. If you go to the forums and at the right hand side you will see counties in blue. Click on any one of those and it will let you enter a new topic.
If you have any questions post them on the forum and one on the mods will help out.
Nora-Mod.
Have read faq and have found what I may have been doing incorrectly, but the forum will not allow me to post a question or concern. Am trying to follow your example but notice that it does not seem to be what I saw on faq as it seemed to state that everything should go in one repetitive line. If there is still something that I am doing incorrectly I welcome the insight.
Have put "8" beside Freuchman's Rock but am uncertain if that is accurate. |

The ruins of an old church Surrounded by a Stone built Wall in good repair which encloses a grave yard, still used by the more Ancient families of its locality. The church seems to have been but small, the remains of the walls are nearly level with the ground and are in length about 30 feet by 15 in breadth. Senwick originally was a small parish of itself, but in 1670 was United with the parish of Borgue. Attached to the south side of the ruins, is a cemetery belonging to the Gordons of Earlston. Cadets of the noble family of Lochinvar, inside of the wall which surrounds it, is a Marble Tablet surrounded by beautiful drapery. The tablet bears the following inscription "Sacred to the Memory of Juliana J. Gallimore. (Spouse of Sir John Gordon of Earlston Baronet) who died at Senwick house 13th February Aged 42 Years. (for farther inscription see forms 136.) Underneath is another tablet bearing a Coat of Arms wrought in White Marble between the Scotch thistle & the English Rose are three Boars heads and an Earls Coronet, above the Coronet are a half rised visor supporting an Arm and hand which Grasps something like a Sceptre. On the out side of the Wall of this Cemetery is another tablet having on each side a fluted pillar of the Corinthian style of Architecture, It was erected to the Memory of Hugh Blair Esqr, of Dunrod by his Widow. See for its inscription in forms 136. Senwick (originally Sandwick) is compounded of Sand, And Wick signifying a narrow neck of land, which is very discriptive both of its soil and situation.--- |

The most remarkable fact of which
any memory is preserved by tradition is the
robbery of the church of Senwick by French pirates.
The church at that time contained a very Considerable
quantity of plate which the Frenchmen plundered,
and had safely escaped with their booty; but a storm
arising immediately after they had put to sea, the ship
was dashed upon a rock at a little distance from the
shore opposite to the church and every person on board
perished - In memory of this event the rock has ever since
been styled the Frenchman's Rock.

The supposed site of an ancient Castle situated on the brink of a rocky cliff [by] the sea shore of the farm of Balmangan. It is traditionally handed down, that it had been one of those places of strength which were erected in feudal times to repel envasions on the Sea Coast &c. The only object that would now indecate of a Castle being here, is something similar to the remains of a fosse. Sysom in his description of Galloway Says "Adjacent to Balmangan Bay is a promontary called the Meikle Ross wherein is to be seen the ruins of an old Castle, where in times past some of the inhabitants have digged up silver plate as I am informed, as also therein have been found certain pieces of Silver, with a strange & uncouth impression thereon resembling the old Pictish coine". |

[Situation] 1/2 Mile N N E [North North East] of Balmae
One of the largest fortresses that is known to be in the south of Scotland, situated on the top of a very commanding hill on the farm of Drummore. It is of an oval shape (hollowed in the top) and surrounded on all sides by a pretty intire double fosse & ramparts, with the exception of a small portion of its S, [South] East side which is nearly obliterated by the plough &c, On & near the centre of the fort, is the appearance of a pit partially filled up with stones and to what it may have been devoted for is not known in this locality. The Statistical Acct. [Account] mentions of a well the sides built of stone, which some think supplied the Garrison with water, No trace of such can now be found
"The fortress which may be considered the border garrison of the Selgovae stood on an eminence of about 250 feet high at Drummore. The Romans retained possession of it during the reigns of the Antonines or as some think for nearly 300 years."

Near the eastern influx of the Deva,
the Selgovae had a hill fort, which may
be deemed their frontier garrison,on the west,
which is called, by Ptolemy, Caerbantorigum;
Signify in the speech of the British tribes, the
fort on the conspicuous height. From Caer
the well known term for a fort, Ban Conspicuous,
and Tor a height, with a latin termination.

Of this old Castle Symson in his history of Galloway , says
