This object is 12 feet high and flat on the top with a gentle declivity is called by some parties a Fort, and by others a Moat which from appearance seems correct.
There is a tradition in this locality that a mansion house in some past ages stood near this place which was the residence of some of the ancestors of the late Broughton Murray M. P. [Member of Parliament] for Kirkcudbrightshire. It was usual to have moats near Baronial Mansions in the Feudal times. |

This name applies to spot of ground which is handed down by tradition as being the place where an improper intimacy was carried on between one of the Abbots of Dundrennan and Lady Kirkarswell n [nee] Broughton. The traditionary story is related in nearly the following terms.
The Laird of Kirkarswell suspecting an improper intimacy between one of the Abbots of Dundrennan and his lady gave orders that he was going from home for some time, and concealing himself with a few sturdy men to whom he related the circumstances, among whins and other Brushwood, after waiting some time they observed the Abbot and Lady proceed to criminal intercourse at a place called Allan's Cross near the junction of the Abbey Burn with that of the Balmangan Burn, the laird and his men rushed from their hiding place, seized the Abbot and deprived him of manhood, there is to this day a gravestone in the graveyard of Dundrennan with the following inscription. "Elizabeth Vans - sometime lady Broughton." The above is a popular tradition and the Kirkarswell estate was fined in an annual sum for the outrage which is still thought to be subject to if indeed it is not collected. |

A large and roofless pile of ruins situate about 5 miles to the East of the Royal Burgh of Kirkcudbright. It was founded in 1142 by Fergus Lord of Galloway and occupied by monks of the Cistertian order who had come from Rievall [Rievaulx] in England. Its first Abbot was Sylvanus who transferred in 1167 to Rievall [Rievaulx] in 1167 and the last was Edward Maxwell son of John Lord of Herries at whose death it was thence annexed to the Royal Chapel at Stirling by King James 6th in 1621. This Abbey like all others in its time, suffered much at the divan of the reformation, and at a more recent period parts of its walls has been taken down for the purpose of building houses in its locality. Although the building is now greatly dilapidated, enough still remains to indicate its former splendour. Its walls are yet very considerable and mostly entire, covered with a pale grey coloured moss, which gives a character of peculiar and airy lightness to its lofty columns and Gothic arches, (many of which are entire). The original form and extent of the Abby admits of being easily traced. The Church of the Monastery was in the form of a cross, with a central spire, which tradition respresents to have been 200 feet high. The body of the building was 120 ft. [feet] in length, and divided into 3 Aisles, by 7 clustered columns supporting arches entering to the side Aisles. The breadth of each of the side aisles was about 15ft. [feet], and that of the centre aisle 25. The transept measured 120 feet from North to South, and 46 from East to West. The East end of the church was the same breadth, with the middle aisle, and only 35 ft. [feet] in length. On the south side of the church were the cloisters, containing a square area of 94 ft. [feet]. Still further South were the lodgings and different offices of the Monastery, occupying a place of nearly 300 ft. [feet] square. Here are some ancient and curious Monuments to be found. The most remarkable is the tomb of Allan Lord of Galloway, surnamed the great Constable of Scotland, who was buried within the walls of the Abbey in the year 1233. His mutilated figure is rudely represented in Alto relieve cross legged, and in Mail Armour, with a buff coat

Dundrennan Abbey (Continued)----Dundrennan Abbey--Gazetteer of Scotland----above, a belt a cross the shoulder, and another round the waist, in the neighbourhood this figure is generally known by the name of The Belted Knight. There is also a tombstone, bearing the figure of an Abbot in his canonicals, in tolerable preservation, but the inscription upon it is so much decayed as to be illegible. The walls etc. of the Abbey were tastefully repaired up in 1842 from a plan by William Nixon Esqr. of her Majesty's Woods and forrests, upon the whole it exhibits one of the most beautiful specimens of Monastic Antiquity now existing in Scotland. Mr. Thomas Edgar Schoolmaster at Dundrennan, has been recently appointed Keeper of the Abbey, with an annual salary of £5. (See for further particulars in history of Galloway, the Statistical Acct. [Account] of County [etc. End of line obscured]. This Abbey is presently the property of the Crown. Dundrennan Abbey " Says Mr. McDearmid, "Like most religious houses built by the Catholics in Olden time, is beautifully situated in a Valley of the of the Same name;, whether the surrounding limited district gave to or received from the Monastery its present appellations is a point not known, but most probably from the former". The name of Queen Mary lends a charm to to Dundrennan Abbey which bids fair to defer disassociation so long as one stone of the building remains upon another to which she took recourse. After the disastrous battle of Langside."
[Further information on left of form]
The following account of the foundation of this Abbey is chiefly transcribed from the Appendix to Keith's Catalogue of the Bishops etc.
"Dundrennan Abbey situtate on the Solway Firth about two miles from Kirkcudbright in Galloway was founded by Fergus Lord of Galloway in the year 1142, the Monks thereof were of the Cistertian order brought from Rievall [Rievaulx] in England, Sylvanus was the first abbot of this place. Allan Lord of Galloway was buried in this place in the year 1233. This monastery as is evident from its ruins was once a beautiful and extensive pile but is now miserably dilapidated. Hither the unfortunate Queen Mary was escorted from Terreagles by the Lord Herries and from hence she is said to have set out for England.

Allan's Cross
Allan's Cross
Allan's Cross----This name applies to a spot of ground which is handed down by tradition as being the place where an improper intimacy was carried on between one of the Abbots of Dundrennan and Lady Kirkarswell n [nee] Broughton. The traditionary story is related in nearly the following terms. "The Laird of Kirkarswell suspecting an improper intimacy between his Lady and one of the Abbots of Dundrennan gave orders that he was going from home for some time, and concealing himself with a few able men among whins and other brushwood, he saw the Lady and Abbot meet at a place called Allan's Cross near the junction of the Abbey Burn with that of Balmangan Burn and observing them proceed to criminal intercourse, the men laid hold the Abbot and deprived him of manhood, there is to this day a grave stone in Dundrennan graveyard with the following inscription. "Elizabeth Vans, sometime lady Broughton." This tradition is well known in the locality.--[Rerrick]-- Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Thompson

It is nearly circular and surrounded by a fosse and ramparts which is now nearly leveled with the plough, the interior of the fosse and the fort being ploughed and only the ramparts left uncultivated. I can get no account of the origin or promoters of this object, but it is generally called a Fort and as the hill is called Doon Hill probably it was a fort and gave rise to the name of the hill.--Rerrick--John Muir Esq

57C No. 9--Dundrennan Abbey (In Ruins)----This annexation took place in 1621 and was ratified by parliament in that year and again in 1633. Symson writing in 1684 "says the Bishop in Dumblain, a Dean of the Chapel Royal is Patron of the Parish of Rerwick or Dudranen and hath a part of his Revenue paid out of the lands of that Abbacy"
Although the building has suffered much from the devouring hand of time and not a little from dilapidation, for the purposes of Building cottages in the neighbourhood the remains are still very considerable and the original form and extent of the Abbey admits of being easily traced. The church of the Monastery was in the form of a cross, with a central spine, which is said to have been 200 feet high, the body of the building was 120 feet in length, and divided into three aisles, by seven clustered columns supporting arches entering to the side aisles of great height and beauty. The breadth of each of the side aisles

--Dundrennan Abbey (In Ruins)----was about 15 feet, and that of the centre aisle 25 feet. The transept measured 120 feet from north to south, and 46 feet from east to west. The east end of the Church was the same breadth, with the middle aisle, and only 35 feet in length. On the south side of the church were the cloisters, containing a square area of 94 feet. Still further south were the lodgings and different offices of the monastery occupying a place of nearly 300 feet square; at the south end, again, of the western side of these buildings was a small projecting erection in the form of a cross, and a very similar to the church but inverted those portions which fronted the east in the one facing the west in the other.

--Dundrennan Abbey (In Ruins)----mail armour with a buff coat above, a belt across the shoulder, and another round the waist. There is also a tombstone, bearing the figure of an Abbot in his canonicals, in tolerable preservation, but the inscription upon it is so much decayed as to be illegible.
The King appointed the Abbots of Dundrennan for it was one of the Monasteries of which the Pope had not the nomination of the superiors. The income of the Abbey exclusive of that derived from its landed property amounted to £500. The Abbots and monks of Dundrennan had a regality over their land. The Lords Maxwell were the heritable bailies and received as a fee the five pound lands of Mullock and Heston. The Abbey of Dundrennan is remarkable in Scottish history as having been the resting place of the beautiful and unfortunate Mary Queen of Scots, on her retreat after the Battle of Langside in the year 1568.
