Allan's Cross----This name applies to a spot of ground which is handed down by tradition as being the place where an improper intimacy was carried on between one of the Abbots of Dundrennan and Lady Kirkarswell n [nee] Broughton. The traditionary story is related in nearly the following terms. "The Laird of Kirkarswell suspecting an improper intimacy between his Lady and one of the Abbots of Dundrennan gave orders that he was going from home for some time, and concealing himself with a few able men among whins and other brushwood, he saw the Lady and Abbot meet at a place called Allan's Cross near the junction of the Abbey Burn with that of Balmangan Burn and observing them proceed to criminal intercourse, the men laid hold the Abbot and deprived him of manhood, there is to this day a grave stone in Dundrennan graveyard with the following inscription. "Elizabeth Vans, sometime lady Broughton." This tradition is well known in the locality.--[Rerrick]-- Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Thompson
