Auchencairn--A Village--A Small irregular built village Situated about 1/4 of a mile N. W. [North West] of the Bay of the same name, the houses are well built and Chiefly two stories high and fued from the Estate of Miss Culton of Auchenabony ( it is said that a clause is inserted in the fues by which the fuer is bound to build the dwelling houses two stories in height) In the village is a branch Post Office (in communication with Castle Douglas daily) A Free Church a Baptist Chapel A Parish School two good Inns and three inferior ones, and a Corn Mill. This Village is of note as a healthy clean village and is much resorted to in the Summer Season by invalids & Sea bathers, the Census in 1841 was about 370--[Rerrick]--Robert Scott
