050 | [Situation] About 1 3/4 S.E. by E. [South East by East] of the town of Kirkcudbt [Kirkcudbright]. The site of an Ancient village. The site of this village is still well Known to most of the intelligent inhabitants of this locality It is also considered that it was once a populous village although at present no vestige remains except the tracks of two buildings & some remains of fences . In Sinclair's Sta. Acct. [Statistical Account] Vol.[Volume] XI Page 14 is the following account "In the parishes of Dunrod & Galtway now annexed to Kirkcudbright Some vestiges of villages may still be traced: and from good information obtained from old people still alive; the inhabitants of these villages were very numerous. The cause of this depopulation must be traced back to the time of the civil wars in the reign of Charles I. and Cromwell, the usurper. John 3 Lord of Kirkcudbright who possessed almost the whole property of this extensive parish took up arms for the King raised a regiment of upon his own charges (levied chiefly from among his tenants & vassals) and carried them over to Ireland from whence it may be presumed very few ever returned." |
