This name applies to the [Supposed] Site of a Gate, which is said to have led to the cells, inhabited by the Monks of St Mary's [only]. As the priory was surrounded by high walls, and contains an outer & Inner Gate, the former called the "Great Cross" which Stood at a distance about 1/2 a Mile from the [priory] and the latter called the "[Little] Cross".
