Any Ornament whatever but the whole is of the Most Simple unpretending construction and kept in repair at a very Moderate Cost by the Burgh, Amounting to £5.0.11 for the Year 1848 None of the parts get any proper name but on the Fountain at the Cross is a Stone with the following inscription
This Fount not riches life Supplies
Art gives what Nature here denies
Posterity Must Surely bliss
St Cuthberts Sons who purchased this
"Water introduced 23rd March 1763
This Tablet renewed 1840"
The expence of Constructing the Waterworks was defrayed in part by the proceeds
of a general Collection for that purpose the eficiency being made up from the funds
of the Borough. On the original Subscription paper Still in good preservation
is the following Note. "The WorShipful The Lodge of St Cuthbert held at Kirkcudbright
heartily Approving of the above Scheme Now properly Compleated haev paid Five Guineas, As
a present towards defraying the expences thereof this 27th December 1764"
