CHURCH [Kirkcudbright] Church Revd [Reverend] John Underwood Parish Minister Oakley House Kirkcudbright 050 A large and magnificent Gothic building completed in the year 1838, at an expense of £6582.6.11 1/2, £2565 of which was obtained by the Earl of Selkirk for 1026 sittings and donations to the amt [Amount] of £1120.1.2 and the remaining part paid by the Earl of Selkirk. It is most pleasantly situated at the south side of St Cuthbert's St and ornamented all round with young shrubs "It has a spire of considerable height attached to it,containing an excellent Clock, and a good bell, both presents from the late James Lennox Esqr of Dalskairth"; and the site of the building was given by the Earl of Selkirk. The minister has no manse, but receives 50£ yearly as manse rent. He has a Glebe Containing about 9 acres of pasture land, and receives a yearly rent for it amounting to 18£ and is stipends is 19 Chalders of which he receives in money 46£ per Annum - The number of communicants is 1848 was 600 and the average number of hearers about 1000.
