A Considerable headland on the Sea Coast of the Parish of KirKbean. Its shore or Strand consists of groups of flat rugged rocKs which renders it very dangerous from vessels navigating it. On this headland is a Light house and a Small Village called Southerness, |

A considerable tract of land on the farm of Preston, and situated at the Sea coast, in Stormy weather it is inundated by high Spring tides, On it is a Trigl. [Trigonometrical] Station called by Trigl. [Trigonometrical] party "Preston".- |

[Situation] At the S.E. [South East] corner of the Parish of KirKbean.
A Lighthouse on the Southerness Pt [Point] it was erected in 1842 by the [Commissioners] of the navigation of the Nith. It is about 65 feet in height and about 20 feet Square at base, but decreases 1 foot in 10 to the top of the tower. The lamp is of a circular shape about 10 feet in diameter and contains 6 burners , all of which are white light. Prior to this light house a Small tower or pinnacle stood here which had one light, and was used as a temporary lighthouse or Landmark for Mariners |

A headland projecting into the North Side of the Solway it is of A Triangular Shape low And flat. And within the tide MarK is bounded by flat rocKs And Bolders. And the tide MarK on the extreme point of it Stands A Lighthouse, It got the given name from the Supposition that it was the Most Southern point of Land in Scotland And which it is nearly Supposed to be it is Commonly, when SpoKen of, And Sometimes in writing Call'd Saturoness - i.e A contraction of the Given Name .- Yet the one given is the Correct one. - |

A lighthouse Standing Close by the tide marK on Southerness Point, It is about 60 feet high And exhibits Six Stationery lights of a Clear brilliant Colour- it is the property of the River Nith Navigation Commissioners Under the Guidance of the Burgh of Dumfries. And was built by them first As A land marK but was converted into A lighthouse by the Same Party about 40 Years ago. the building Which is A Square of About 20 feet with a Slated roof is in good repair- |
