OS1/20/143/4 SOUTHERNESS LIGHTHOUSE Southerness Lighthouse Southerness Lighthouse Southerness Lighthouse Robert Hunter John Hyslop See plan 47B 047 [Situation] At the S.E. [South East] corner of the Parish of KirKbean. A Lighthouse on the Southerness Pt [Point] it was erected in 1842 by the [Commissioners] of the navigation of the Nith. It is about 65 feet in height and about 20 feet Square at base, but decreases 1 foot in 10 to the top of the tower. The lamp is of a circular shape about 10 feet in diameter and contains 6 burners , all of which are white light. Prior to this light house a Small tower or pinnacle stood here which had one light, and was used as a temporary lighthouse or Landmark for Mariners

And within the tide MarK is bounded by flat rocKs And Bolders. And the tide MarK on the extreme point of it Stands A Lighthouse, It got the given name from the Supposition that it was the Most Southern point of Land in Scotland And which it is nearly Supposed to be it is Commonly, when SpoKen of, And Sometimes in writing Call'd Saturoness - i.e A contraction of the Given Name .- Yet the one given is the Correct one. -

And was built by them first As A land marK but was converted into A lighthouse by the Same Party about 40 Years ago. the building Which is A Square of About 20 feet with a Slated roof is in good repair-
