[North North] West of Culcaigrie Loch A small plantation on the farm of Mayfield consisting of Ash, Oak and Fir, it is situated on the west bank of "Plengap Burn" hence its name.
OS1/20/129/33 MARTYR'S MONUMENT [Kirkconnell] Martyr's Monument Martyr's Monument Martyr's Monument David Halliday Peter Murray William Nelson Esqr. 044 [Situation] About 1¼ Mile North of Culcaigrie Loch A stone and lime built pyramidical pillar about 18 or 19 feet high having a square base of about 6 feet by 6. It was erected A.D. 1831 to perpetuate the memory of five persons who were shot to death on this spot. On a stone in the East side of it is the following inscription viz. [videlicet] "Sacred to the memory of David Halliday of Mayfield, John Bell of Whiteside, Robert Lennox of Irlandton, Andrew McRobert and James Clemet who suffered martyrdom on this spot A.D. 1685 for their adherence to the covenant and true presbyterian principles by that wicked persecutor Grierson of Lag." On the west side is the following viz. [videlicet] "Death broke their fetters off then swift they fled" "From sin and sorrow and by angels led" "Enter'd the mansion of eternal joy" "Blest souls your warfare's done praise, Love enjoy"

OS1/20/129/34 MARTYR'S MONUMENT (Kirkconnell) Martyr's Monument Martyr's Monument Martyr's Monument David Halliday Peter Murray William Nelson Esqr. 044 [Continued] South Side is the following [viz] "Sion which had risen to a g [glory] that did even excel and da [--] the first reformation was now tramp [trampled] under the foot of the destroyer and all h [her] beauty laid in the dust" On the North Side is the following viz. "In testimony of the feelings of the present generation on t [the] 11th. September 1831 about 10,000 persons assembled here and after hearing an excellent sermon preached by the Revd. [Reverend] Jo [John] Osburne from Psalm 74 verse 22nd. Contributed a fund f [for] the erection of this monument to the memory of these Mar [Martyrs] Alexander Murray Esqr. of Broughton having handsomely given [the] ground. --- four of them were carried to their respective b [burying] places. But James Clemet being a stranger wa [was] interred on the spot"

Ainslies Map _ 1820 044 A grave on the moorland part of the farm of Kirkconnel, it is marked by a small but neatly executed headstone on which is the following inscription viz. "Memen Tomori" Here lyes James Clemet who was surprised and shot to death on this place by Grier of Lagg for his adherence to Scotland's reformation, covenants, National and Solemn league A.D. 1685"
OS1/20/129/35 35 Parish of Tongueland Trace 5 Martyr's Stone - [situation] About 1 1/4 Mile North of Culcaigrie Loch "On Kirkconnell Moor is the grave of a Martyr called McClement who was slain along with four others and buried on that spot during the persecution in 1685. One of his fellow sufferers is interred in the Churchyard of Anwoth where there is a long rhymed epitaph on his gravestone which is printed in the "Cloud of Witnesses". Ten years ago a sermon was preached on the spot where he was killed and a collection made to defray the expenses of a Monument to his memory. An immense multitude assembled and the amount was used for the erection of a stone pillar with a great number of inscriptions.
