Revd. [Reverend] D.S. Ferguson, Strachan Mr. A. McConnachie Teacher Strachan Douglas Wimberley Esqr. Lumphanan Jarvise's Memorials of Angus & Mearns |
010.03 | A small conical mound situated about a mile west of the village of Strachan _ "There are three circular, and evidently artificial mounds, two of them covered with wood of from forty to fifty years growth _ The third is named Castle Hill, but no remains of a Castle or fort are to be seen nor is there any tradition of its existence" _ Extract from Statistical Account. "There is a local tradition that Alan the Durward or "Hostiarrius" had a proprietory interest in Strachan, and an insulated conical mound called the Castle Hill about a mile west of Kirkton, is said to have been the site of his stronghold. How long the Strachans were proprietors of their native district has not been ascertained. Probably they were succeeded by Fraser thane of Cowie, whose only daughter Margaret carried the immense estates of that baron, among which were the lands of Strachan, by marriage to Sir William Keith Marischal of Scotland. It seems likely that the Castle Hill was the site of Keith's residence before he built a castle at Dunottar, at least in 1351 his charter of the lands of Mathers, which were given in dowery with his sister Catherine to Alexander of Berkerly bears to have been granted "apud mansum capitale nostrum de Strathekin" (from our chief residence in Strachan)" _ Extract from Jarvise's Memorials of Angus and Mearns. |
