Tollbooth [continued from page 37] building has an ancient appearance and is supposed to have been built in 1607, it is situated at the N.E. [North East] corner of the Harbour and is now used as a Store &c.
"Its existence as a burgh was at an early period recognised by the Legislature, and an Act of Parliament in 1607, c. 10, ordains 'the said Burgh of Stonehaven to be in all time coming the head Burgh of the Sheriffdom of Kincardine." (New. Stat. Act. [Statistical Account] P. [Page] 229-30)
