"This parish seems to have derived its name from the Castle of Kinneff, the remains of which may still be seen in the neighbourhood of the Church. According to a local tradition Kenneth, one of the Kings of Scotland, was its founder and it was afterwards retained as a royal residence. The parish is nearly triangular in figure having for its boundaries, on the south Bervie, on the east the German Ocean, on the north Dunnottar, and on the west Arbuthnott. It extends 5 miles along the sea coast, its breadth at the northern extremity being about 4 and at the Southern less than half a mile. According to a Survey made by Mr. Garden in 1774, it contains 6408 English acres. The sea coast along its whole ex

"extent is rocky, presenting a range of cliffs about 180 feet in height and generally with no beach intervening to separate them from the deep water. Occasionally they fall back into little bays where a narrow strip of coarse gravel is heaped up by the waves, but sand is almost unknown. Though bare of wood the soil is fertile often covered with rich verdure to the edge of the Sea, and the rugged aspect of the rocks, their deep caves and precipitous cliffs offer much that is bold and picturesque to the lovers of natural scenery." (New Stat Acct P 309.) [New Statistical Account Page 309.] "Previous to the Reformation the parish of Kinneff also included Bervie and Catterline, even so late as 1608 by a decree of the Lords Commissioners of Teinds the parish of Bervie is discerned to remain a part of the parish of Kinneff, and because there was no bridge on the river of Bervie, the minister of Kinneff agreed to keep a Suffragan at Bervie." ( New Stat. Act. P. 318.) [New Statistical Account Page 318.] "The name of Kinneff is said to have arisen from one of the Kenneths having had a hunting seat in the Parish, and the kirk sometimes called the 'church of Saint Kenneth.' The remains of an old house near the kirk were known towards the end of the last century, as St Arnty, or St. Arnold's Kill and previous to the Reformation, the church of Bervie was a pendicle of Kinneff. Kinneff was in the diocese of St. Andrews, but the kirks of Katerin (Katerline) and Kingornie were in that of Brechin." (Land of the Lindsays P. [Page] 315)

"The late Revd. [Reverend] A. Stewart, Minister of this parish, presented to the Society of Antiquaries a vase, with a number of bronze rings of various sizes two of them entire, the rest in fragments with a spear head of bronze. The following interesting description by Mr Stewart is presented in the Society's Minutes. These relics of antiquity were found on the 15th. Decr. [December] 1831, by my workmen, while trenching a field on the top of a cliff overhanging the German Ocean, and near the side of the old castle of Kinneff. The piece of Metal resembling the point of a Spear or part of a Sword, was discovered about twelve inches below the surface of the ground, lying across the mouth of the urn, but separated from it by a layer of earth about two inches thick. Round the mouth of the urn there was an outer edge or rim about two inches in depth, and of the same material as the urn itself, but it crumbled into dust on being handled. The urn was quite full of earth compactly pressed together. And on the surface of this earth, were found the inner rings set upon their sides, and which were broke into their present state by the workmen attempting to pull them out of the earth. At the bottom of the urn, were found the larger rings entire, and also two button shaped ornaments, the one made of a substance resembling bone, the other of a substance like coal, the latter was quite entire when discovered, but has since fallen to pieces." ( New. Stat. Act P 315-16) [New Statistical Account Page 315-16] Mr. Smith above named was one of our party who found the vase, he verified the above extract and pointed out the place where the vase &c. were found. There was formerly at this place a large Cairn, or Tumulus composed of loose stones and gravel the base of which was a circle of considerable extent. A section was cut down the South side which disclosed a layer of Black unctuous earth resting on what appeared to be the natural surface of the ground, mixed with this layer near the centre of the base, was a quantity of broken Urns, pieces of bone, and a number of Arrow Heads composed of Flint, and singed apparently from the effects of fire. From five to seven hundred cart loads of stone were taken from the cairn to build dykes &c. and but few traces of it remain. The people speak of it as the Druids Camp, but it has evidently been a large Cairn or Tumulus. [Signed] B. Render Corp. R.E. [Corporal Royal Engineers] |

"In addition to Kinneff, Bervie, and Catterline there seems to have been religious service in Barras at the Chapel of St. John. At what time this Chapel fell into disuse does not appear, but the right of presenting to it, is several times mentioned in the seventeenth century. + That it may have had some connection with the Knight's Templars has been inferred partly from its name (the Chapel of St. John) and partly from other circumstances. In 1632 among the lands in which Sir Robert Arbuthnott was served heir to his father we find 'Terris Templariis de Kinneff infra parochiam de Kinneff'. These 'terrae templariae' would seem to have belonged at some period to the Knights of the Temple. There is still a house in the parish well known by the name of the Temple, and there is the hill of St. John, at the foot of which lies a farm called the Chapel of Barras." (New Stat. Acct. P. 318-9) [New Statistical Account Page 318-9]
+ In 1631 Alexander Stratoun of that Ilk was served heir to his father in the lands of Harbourscheillis, Glassland &c. Cum advocatione (patronage advowson) Capellariae de St. John in Kinneff vocatae Barras." (Inquis. Spec. Kincard. No. 56) [Inquisitionum Specialum Kincardine No. 56] Ten years later is found in the hands of another family, for, in 1641 Parliament passed a ratification in favour of William Gray, and of his

his son the master of Gray, of all the lands in which they were infeft, among others the lands of Kinneff, with the tower thereof and the patronage of the chaplainry of the Chapel of Barras." (Acts of Parliament of Scotland Vol 5. P. 625 [Volume 5. Page 625] )
"The Chapel was probably that of St. John which stood at Barras, near places called the Mort-hill and Templelands - at least the advowsons of the Chaplainries of Kinneff and Barras were long united, and, so late as 1641, were given to William Gray of Pittendrum, together with the kirklands of Kinneff. But there was at least another chapel in the district, for in a deed of reversion of Kinneff, granted by Alexander Straiton of the Keym, to Andrew, Lord Gray, in 1493, mention is made of a croft of land 'lyand at the bridgend beside Saint Martin's Chaple' betwixt the lands of Dullachy and Disclune." (Memorials of Angus and Mearns P [Page] 438)
There is no vestige of this Chapel remaining and the only person whom I have been able to collect any information from regarding it is Mrs. Jane Marshall, an old woman who resides at Roadside. She states that she has resided in the parish about 67 years, and that she has heard her mother say that she saw the Duke of Cumberland's army on its march to Culloden in 1746, and she has always understood from her mother that a Roman Catholic Chapel stood at this place, and that it was burnt and destroyed by part of the above mentioned army in 1746. The site marked is a very likely place for a chapel, and the people state that when the ground is under Crop that Corn &c. grows very luxuriantly on this portion of ground, the cause of which is supposed to be the rich nature of the soil which formed the grave yard surrounding the Chapel.

"There was a Tumulus or Cairn upon St. John's-hill opened about seventy years ago, in the bottom of which a little under the surface of the ground, were found three long flat stones, one of them covering the other two, and having a shorter one at each end. In this was contained nearly a cart load of of rich black earth, having a mixture of half burnt bones and bits of oak charcoal without any kind of Urn. (New. Stat, Act. P. 315) [New Statistical Account. Page 315]
From the present appearance of this object, it seems to have been originally a very fine Tumulus of the circular, or Conical type. It appears to have been opened in two or three places by some one as the holes are still to be seen. Its outline at the base is pretty entire, and altogether it forms a conspicuous object, it is situated on St. John's Knap, near the small farm steading of St. Johnshill. [Signed] B. Render Corp. There were found about 8 or 9 years ago at the places marked on Trace two Stone Coffins, in one of the Coffins were two Skeletons Said to be those of a Male and Female of mature growth, the Skeletons were almost entire, and in the Same Coffin were two Urns of dried clay containing ashes &c. One of the Urns is now in possession of Mr James Smith, Upper Fernyflatt, it is in good preservation and appears to have been ornamented by cross lines as shown on sketch. [Sketch inserted on page]. In the other Coffin was one Skeleton, but no Urn. The Skeletons were interred in the Grave Yard at Kinneff. The place where they were found is a very dry hillock composed of hard gravel, and the dry nature of the place may probably account for the Skeletons and Urns being in such a good state of preservation. Mr Morrison says that the place has always been called "The Law" and is considered to have been the Seat of judgment for criminals who were afterwards executed on the adjoining hill. (See Gallow Hill Arbuthnott Parish.) It may have been used for this purpose, but originally it appears to have been a place of Sepulchre, and is a very fine Tumulus. [Signed] B. Render. Corp. Mr Morrison states that about 80 years ago there stood at this place the remains of what appeared to have been a Strong Castle, the foundations of which were taken down by his father. There is a stone which was taken from the castle and now built into one of the gables of an outhouse, this stone bears the following inscription [1611 IA IS] supposed to be the initials of one of the Abercrombie family. I have not seen any record of this Castle in any of the Parish or County records, but Mr Morrison is a very intelligent person whose information may be fully relied upon.

The parish Church, built in 1738, repaired in 1784 and again in 1831. It is built on the site of the church in which the Regalia and Royal jewels of Scotland were hid for some years, they having been conveyed from Dunnottar Castle by stratagem, by Mrs Granger, wife of the then Incumbent of the parish, and hid by him under the pulpit of the Church.
"After being thus rescued" (from Dunnottar Castle) "the regalia were kept, sometimes in the church of Kinneff concealed under the pulpit, and at other times in a double-bottomed bed in the Manse till the Restoration, in 1660, when they were delivered to Mr George Ogilvie who restored them." "When King David Bruce returned from France in 1341, he was pursued by the English fleet, and driven so far from his direct course, that the first point of his Kingdom which he touched was the shore of Kinneff. In gratitude for his escape he afterwards caused a chapel to be erected on the spot, and Mass performed. The ruins of this building which were standing at the date of the last Statistical account, have since disappeared, but the bold rock under which he landed, Still bears the name of Craig David, and there is a Spring familiarly known as the Chapel Well." (New Stat Act P. 311-12 [New Statistical Account Pages 311-12])
"Of the Kirk of Kingorney there is now no trace except that a spring near the Old Site is called the Chapel Well, but ruins of the church were to be seen within these Sixty years.' In this neighbourhood King David II, landed from France with his consort Johan in May 1341." (Memorials of Angus & Mearns P. [Page] 442) |

On the Summit of the hill near the [Trigonometrical] Station, a Short distance to the South of Seppie Wood are the remains of what appears to have been a large Cairn. There is no mention of this in any of the records I have seen, but from the appearance of the remains and extent of the base it has evidently been either a Druidical, or Memorial Cairn. [Signed] (B.
