The Urns were composed of dried clay and contained ashes, and small portions of half burnt bones.__ On the South side of this hill there were at one time a large number of Small Cairns which were demolished for road metal, and at the bottom of each cairn there was found a dried clay Urn containing ashes.__ There is no mention of any Cists being found in the last named Cairns, and the Urns were either broken or mouldered away, as they appeared to have been only Sun dried.__ There is a tradition in the neighbourhood that this hill is the Site of a battle.__ [Signed] B. About the same time and near the South edge of the Cairn there was found a dried Clay Urn containing a quantity of small pieces of bones partly burnt. At about 60 feet east from the last named and about the same date there was found on the margin of a Kiln or Pit and [a] dried Clay Urn containing a quantity of partly burnt bones._ The Urns were of the same pattern, and from the description given by Mr Kerr, who was there [when] they were found, they resembled the Sketch given on margin. _ Both Urns were destroyed, but the base of the cairn can yet be traced on the ground. History and tradition both corroborate the fact of a castle having been at Glenbervy from a very remote period, and there is no doubt but the King made it his residence upon the occasion referred to, although the silence of the writer of the royal Diary on that particular point, might lend those unacquainted with the locality to infer that the party had rather encamped among the mountains, the designation 'Mountagne' being merely descriptive of the topographical appearance of the district. __ The old castle of Glenbervy is believed to have occupied nearly the same site, on the banks of the Bervy water as the present neat mansion house, and at the time of the King's visit it belonged to a branch of the old family of Melville. Many barons of that name did homage to Edward, and among these was the laird of Glenbervy. His submission took place at Lumphanan in Aberdeenshire on the 21st. July, and, from the writs presented by Sir Francis Palgrave, it appears that John of Stowe, parson of Glenbervy, performed the same service at the same time and place (b) ".__ (a) Bannatyne Miscell. 1.277.__ (b) Palgrave 177.__)

It adjoins the burial aisle of the Douglases, which is wholly covered with ivy and shaded by a few good specimens of the Yew.__ The church which belonged to the diocese of Brechin, is rated in the ancient taxatis at £20 Scots. A chapel situated at Drumlithie, was dependent upon the kirk of Glenbervy, the patronage of both of which livings went along with the estates. (a)
OS1/19/12/80 See Page 83 Douglas Aisle See Name Sheet Attached. Although none of the monuments in the kirk yard of Glenbervy has any pretension to beauty of design, few rural grave yards contain so many memorials of the ancestors of those who have rendered themsleves famous in the annals of their country. The most interesting to the historians and antiquary are those within the Douglas Aisle __the one a mural tablet and the other chest shaped. __ The first is a renewed monument of date 1680 with some curious mortuary armaments, and the armorial bearings of Hassa, Olifant, Melville, Auchleck, and Douglas. The inscription, which in old contracted Latin, narrates the valourous actions, and the matrimonial alliances, of the lairds, and ladies of Glenbervy, from the remote period of A.D. 730. __ Although little reliance need be placed on this sculputered narrative which is one of the most singular of its kind extant (its perpetuation of the sobriquet of the fifth Earl of Angus, he being there designed 'Bell the Cat,' being perhaps not least curious of its features,) the lands of Glenbervy were in possession of a baron in the twelfth century, whose surname probably was Melville, it being a common name in the district at that period. The present house has undergone several repairs and alterations at different periods, but, the greatest alterations were made in 1720, when a great portion of it was rebuilt, the two fine circular towers now standing appear to have been rebuilt in the same style and dimensions, as the former ones, Several improvements in the gardens and grounds adjoining are now going on which will add much to the beauty of the place which formerly has been rather neglected, It is now the property and residence of Mrs. Badenach Nicolson. __ This is always spoken of as Glenbervie House [Initialled] B.R.

Thom Badenach Nicolson Esqr. 016.15 " The ruins and site of the old Church which belonged to the diocese of Brechin the name of the Patron Saint is lost. The first recorded parson is described as " Henricus. persona de Glenberuin" in a grant of the lands of Bractullo, in Kirkden, by Randulph (1296) of Strathechyn, to the Cathedral of Brechin, about the year 1222, but, from the time of Stowe, until nearly the middle of the fifteenth Century, there are few notices of much moment. either of the Kirk or Vicars, Some of the Vicars, as then frequently happened, were nearly related to the chief heritor or patron This become an Episcopal Church when Episcopacy was first introduced into this country and A Chapel situated at Drumlithie was dependent upon the Kirk of Glenbervie the patronage of both of which livings went along with the Estates, but when the Jacobites were annihilated in this quarter and the Chapel at Drumlithie burned down (1746) this was converted into the Established Parish Church and remained as such till 1826 when a new Church was erected, and this one speedly fell into decay. ___ " Here also is the burial place of the Stuarts of Inchbreck, where a brass plate affixed to a part of the ruins of the Old Kirk commemorates the names of the various lairds from the year 1550." __ (Mems. [Memorials] of Angus & Mearns P. [Page] 95) All that remains of the Old Church is part of a Tower, or Pillar, which has apparently formed the South west corner.
