| St Palladius' Chapel &c Contd [Continued] | [Continued from Page 134 "There is no certainty as to the period when St Palladius' Chapel was first erected. Although the tradition is, that St Palladius lived and died at Fordoun, it is more probable that amidst the inundation of Monks which came early from Italy to Scotland some of them attracted by the beauty of the place fixed their residence at Fordoun and built there a chapel to their favourite Saint, pretending no doubt that they had brought Some of his bones and other relics along with them. These were probably placed in a humble chest at first, but, as the fame of the Saint increased, and, consequently also the pilgrimages to his Chapel, it was thought necessary to remove them from their first humble resting place to a Silver Shrine a present from the Archbishop of St Andrews". (New Stat Act P.66,67) [New Statistical Account pages 66 & 67] "To the tragical death of King Kenneth, the fine Sculptured stone monument which stands at St Palladius' Chapel at Fordoun is Commonly supposed to refer- from the fact, no doubt that armed horsemen and some other warlike symbols are carved upon it, also because tradition says that the King was on is way at the time of his murder to do penance at the Shrine of St Palladius, for the part he is said to have had in the death of Malcolm Duffus. This Stone I may add differs from the great mass of Similarly Sculptured Monuments by being Carved only on one side and thus perhaps it was a lying stone, and may have covered the grave of some old Celtic Baron of the district."
