An elegant and commodious Mansion built partly in the Castellated Style and containing all the improvements of a Modern Mansion, it is the residence of Sir Thomas Gladstone, Bart. [Baronet]. It is reported traditionally that the name originated during the Feudal times, when the proprietor of the Estate dwelt near to Balbegno Castle, and being at Feud with the Laird of Balbegno, and within Shot of the Castle they were continually annoyed by Missiles Missiles etc from Balbegno, and being the weaker party their proximity to the Castle was anything but Comfortable So they removed to near where the present House Stands and in the language of that day Said, "Fasgadh is Sinn", we are sheltered, or we are protected. The present name is pronounced by the old people as Fasqy, but by the proprietor as Fask. The Building is all modern. |

"The next most ancient place is Balbegno Castle, on the same estate, and Still habitable. The date of 1509 is visible on the parapet wall. The expense of Building it is said to have been so great, that the proprietor whose name was Wood was obliged to sell the lands of Balnakettle and Littlestrath, then belonging to him to enable him to complete it, Various pieces of Sculpture are exhibited in the higher parts of the Hall, Within, there is a lofty hall, the roof of which is composed of freestone, arched and groined and divided into Sixteen triangular Spaces in these are painted the names and Coats of arms of Sixteen Scotch Peers" (New Stat Act [Statistical Account])
"Balbegno Castle, with arched hall, and medalion portraits round the bartisan was erected by a cadet of the knightly house of Bonington, in Angus - the date Ano 1509 and the names of the erector I,WOD, and his wife E,IRVEIN, being carved near one of the upper Windows." (Land of the Lindsays) This Castle is now the property of Sir Thomas Gladstone Bart [Baronet], it is in good repair, but not inhabited. |

"The vitrified Site of Green Cairn near Balbegno Castle is called Finella's Castle." (Land of the Lindsays.) "Others think that Finella's place of residence must have been about a mile and a half South-west from the Village of Fettercairn, where the remains of a large fortified place called Greencairn, are still visible, This is a mass of ruins on the top of a round eminence of about forty or fifty feet above the level of the adjoining grounds, What its origin was or when it ceased to be inhabited is unknown. But that it must have been a place of great strength, and must have been many ages uninhabitable, is evident from the portions of vitrified materials of which it was composed still remaining and from the entire State of desolation to which it is now reduced, notwithstanding the durable nature of that mode of Building." (New Stat Act. [Statistical Account]) "About three quarters of a mile besouth of Fettercairn Maitland mistakingly supposed that there had been a beautiful Roman Fort, But he merely mistook a British Strength for a Roman post. At my request this Fort at Balbegno was accurately examined in May 1798, by James Strachan, who inspecting it with unprejudiced eyes found it to be a vitrified fort of British construction. He says, it is situated about seven hundred yards west of Balmain and near a mile South-west from Fettercairn, it is of an oval form, and is surrounded by two ramparts. The outer rampart is built with [continued on page 61] |

The space betwixt the outer, and inner, rampart measures 93 feet 9 inches. The inner wall is 30 feet thick, and has all undergone the operation of vitrification. The area within this is 140 feet long, 67 feet 6 inches broad at the East End, and 52 feet 6 inches broad at the West End. The elevation on the north side is about 40 feet, and full 60 feet on the South Side where it is all wet mossy ground, He calls it the Green Cairn at Balbegno." (Chalmer's Caledonia)
"It is on the Estate of Balbegno and tradition calls it Finella's Castle, and the people believe it to have been, her residence: after the murder of King Kenneth his attendants set fire to the Building and reduced it to ashes."
Old Stat. Act. [Statistical Account] Vol. [Volume] 5. Page 334
This "Cairn" is well known by the name given, The Stones mentioned above have all been taken away from the place for building, and other purposes, and the appearance of the ground would lead to the belief that part of the ground had been excavated for the foundation stones. Small vitrified portions of stone are Scattered about the place, which is now grown over with Whins &c, there is no appearance of the inner, and outer ramparts, mentioned by Chalmers, but exterior of the 'Oval' as a whole is well defined. The ground appears to have been artificially raised to the North and North East, where the natural feature is less steep than on the South Side where the base of the "Cairn" is level with the natural contour of the elevation. His initials, (John Earl of Middleton) Coronet, and Coat-of-arms, also, appear on the Capital of an octagonal pillar in the Village. This pillar, which is understood to have been the Cross of the old town of Kincardine, the remains of which are still traced on the Fettercairn Estate, bears the date of 1670, and rises about 7 feet above a mass of building, composed of 6 Concentric Circles, or Circular Steps. an iron rivet is still seen on one side to which the "Jugs" the old instrument of punishment in Scotland, appear from the Marks on the Stone, to have been suspended. (New Stat Act. [Statistical Account]) "It ought to be observed that the Cross, now preserved at the village of Fettercairn, is a memorial of late date, having been erected by the celebrated John, Earl of Middleton, and gifted by him to the town of Kincardine. He was born near that place, and latterly assumed his titles from lands which he held in the Same neighbourhood, and the Cross bears his own arms and initials, with the Scottish lion, and the date of 1670." (Memoirs of Angus Mearns.) The Cross is in a good state of preservation, and is a very conspicuous object in the Village. 4/3/63 |

"The Burn and Arnhall, both of which under the designation of the latter, formed a barony belonging to the noble house of Southesk down to a Comparatively recent date, and some mementoes of the occupancy of that family are yet visible on a sculptured stone at the Chapelton of
Arnhall, as well as in some parts of the old mansion house. These relics of the Southesk family consist of a stone, built into the
wall of a cottage at Chapelton, bearing an erroneous sculpture of the family arms, for the Spread Eagle instead of being single is double
headed. These initials and dates which refer to the Second and fifth Earls, are also upon it 'ANNO.1668. E.I:E.I.S. 1704'; and within the
house at Arnhall, but now plastered over, are the dates 1669 and 1709." (Land of the Lindsays. by Andrew Jervise. Page 102) |

"These relics of the Southesk family Consist of a stone, built into the wall of a cottage at Chapelton bearing an erroneous Sculpture of the family arms, for the Spread Eagle instead of being Single is double headed. 9th April 1863
Sir,
On the Plan of The Burn and
Arnhall which you sent me, I
observe that at Chapelton there is
"Burying Ground" written on the
Plan; and the word "Chapelton"
leads to the supposition that there
had been a Chapel here. In "The
Land of the Lindsay, by Jervise (Page
102)" reference is made to the "Barony
of Arnhall", and the "Arms of the
Southesk family", as shewn on the
Sculptured stone at the Cottage of
Chapelton, but no reference is made
to the Burying Ground, nor any re
ference to a chapel. I have also
[continued on page 99b]
Lt Col [Lieutenant Colonel] McInroy &c &c
[RH side of page (in a different hand):]
The burying ground referred to
existed on a site a few yards
S. [South] East of the only Cottage now
at "Chapelton": but had been
brought under cultivation
a very long time ago - It is
known that there was a
"Chapel" there and it may
be concluded that the
site was close to the
burying ground - I know
nothing of the subject further
than the county traditions
as to the existence of a
"Chapel" in remote times, but
the "sculptured remains" on
the cottage are evidently taken
from a tombstone, and "bones"
on the site of the burying
ground were occasionally
turned up some thirty years
ago.- |

and the "Statistical account", but
Can not find any reference to the
"Burying Ground", or a Chapel. As
it is essential that the Sites of all
antiquities should appear on the
Ordnance Plans, will you be
pleased to inform me if you can
give any information on the above,
or if you have any documents
relating to it? --
I have obtained from the people
in the neighbourhood the name of
"Nether Mains of Arnhall", for the
Cottages near Chapelton, will
you be pleased to inform me
[RH side of page (in different hand):]
I have no documents whatever
on the subject, for my "Charters"
as far back as 1631, speak of
the "toun and lands of Chapeltown"
but nothing of a "Chapel".
I think this is a correct
name

"This parish is supposed by some to have derived its name from its vicinity to the Cairn O'Mount, a part of the Grampian Mountains over which the public road to Aberdeenshire passes, and to which it begins to ascend at a small distance to the north of the village. The parish of Fettercairn forms the extreme western division of Kincardineshire, on the South side of the Grampians. Its length, from South to North is 8 miles, and its greatest breadthe from East to West 4½. It contains about 13192 imperial acres, or about 20 Square Miles of Surface.
