023.02 | "The only village is Fettercairn which is a burgh of barony on the Estate of Fettercairn. There are two fairs held in it annually, the one at Whitsuntide and the other at Martinmas. There is no Weekly Market town in the Parish, the nearest Market is Montrose 12 miles distant. The Parish Church is not Conveniently situated for many of the Parishioners, being placed at the North-east extremity of the Parish and 5 miles distant from some of the inhabitants towards the South-west." (New Stat Act. [Statistical Account]) There are in the Village a Good Inn, Temperance Hotel, Post Office, Bank Office, Town Hall, (in which is the village Library) Parish Church, Parish School, Free Church, Free School, Parish Manse, Free Church Manse, and Gas Works; for description of which See Name Sheets. The Buildings are of the ordinary type, mostly occupied by work people. The village is pleasantly situated in a valley about 4 miles South from the Summit of the Grampian Mountains |
