A stone in the River Dee, situated about 13 chains north from Park Bridge, - Tradition reports that during a feud between the Irvines of Drum, and Keiths of Dunnottar a cadet of the Keith family fell in love with a lady of the Irvine family, and having been discovered by the Irvines while paying a stolen visit to his Sweetheart, he was chased to the River Dee, into which he plunged and swam to the stone, and while resting upon it, was shot by the Irvines - thus firing it the name of Keith Stone. |

A fortified Castle or Stronghold is believed to have stood here, but by whom it was built or the exact date of its erection cannot be obtained satisfactorily. In 1296 King Edward I. in journeying through this locality is believed to have remained for a short time at Durris Castle, and about that time this with the adjoining lands were in the possession of the Knights Templars, who had their principal residence in Maryculter, and subsequently it was used for military purposes and until very lately part of the Embrasures were quite visible. The Castle was Situated on a very conspicuous Eminence overhanging the banks of the River Dee, and commanding an extensive prospect along the course of the Dee, and had a moat or ditch Surrounding it which was Supplied with water by a Small Stream which now runs near this place. The ditch is now filled up and the old building is quite demolished So that the Site can merely be obtained now, it is quite flat upon the top of the hill, and the Sloping banks Surrounding is planted with trees which are now full grown and is the property of A.W. Mactier Esqr. |

The old Mansion house of Durris is believed to have been erected by Sir Alexander Fraser of Durris, in the reign of Charles the 2nd. but the exact date is unknown, another portion was built in the last Century by The Earl of Peterborough who was then proprietor, A third portion was built by Mr. John Innes, who was tacksman of the whole Estate under the last Earl of Peterborough in the year 1796, And the last portion was built by the late Anthony Mactier of Durris in 1834. The old mansion house formerly had a moat or ditch Surrounding it on the Eastern Side, which is now quite filled up, the western Side is well defended by a precipitous natural bank, at the base of which flows the Burn of Durris. The whole building at present has a very beautiful and impressive appearance and is kept in very good repair, together with extensive lawns, garden, and plantations Surrounding, and is the property and residence of A.W. Mactier Esqr. |

Castle of Dores or Durris |
|
|
|
The Castle of Dores stood on the South bank of the Dee, upon a rising ground, or rather a conical hill, which in Gaelic would be written and pronounced Torr, hence probably the real origin of the name of the parish or district. The site is about 12 miles South west of the City of Aberdeen, the place to which King Edward next repaired, and little more than the same distance north east of the castle of Glenbervy.
In going from Glenbervy to Durris, Edward crossed by the mountains of that parish, through a swampy pass, dreary even at this day, called the Cryne Corse, and alighted upon the castle of Dores or Durris as a "manour in the Downes, amange the mountayns", b, Downes being either a misnomer, or discriptive of the flat aspect of the country in the neighbourhood of the castle compared with that through which the royal party had been travelling some days previously. By the route just named King Edward had passed the Stone House of Mergie, crossed the Black Burn and water of Cowy at pretty romantic Spots, and on ascending the hill of Cairnmonearn, would be in view of the Sea, and the ancient town of Aberdeen. In the Swamp on the east, and almost at his feet, lay a trackless wild traversed now-a-days by the Slug Road.
One of the places on Edward's route through these mountains is called Eshintille Regis, c, to distinguish it from another Eshintille which belonged to a Subject. It is said that James V. travelled there incognito, and from the kindness Shewn him by a person named Hog, the farmer of Blairydryne, the Earl Marischal, who had a proprietary interest in Dores, gifted that farm to Hog. The family of Hog have long since died out, but the name is still preserved in the district by a charity which was left by a parishoner so called for educational and other purposes, - among which was a payment to the cattle herds on the hill of Cairnshee, upon which he himself had tended sheep and cattle, for the purpose of raising a Midsummer fire. e.
The site of the Castle of Dores, which the agricultural improvements of the present century has greatly reduced in size, appears to have been moated in old times, and the castle itself was burnt by the Marquis of Montrose, but no record or tradition of it remains in the district, except the Significant name of the "Castlehill". It was

"occupied as a residence by Alexander III. and the earliest mention of it occurs in the Chamberlain Rolls of that period, (1245.) when certain sums of money were paid for repairs to the houses of Collyn (Cowy), and the vessels and bridge at the house of Durres, f., but whether the bridge was of stone or wood is not recorded - it may have been a draw bridge for the castle.
The visit of King Edward occurred on the 13th of July 1296, but of the subsequent history of the castle little has been learned. In 1373, King Robert II. granted to John Fraser, son of the deceased Sir William Fraser, knight, the land of Wester Essyntoly (Which John of Dalgarnok had resigned), for the blench ferme of a silver penny yearly at the Castle hill of Durris - 'apud castrie montem de Durrys.' g. The lands of the Castletown of Dores, which lie but a short distance from Maryculter, where the Knights Templars had a residence, and which barony belonged to them are called 'the Templarie lands', h. but Durris proper was anciently a thanedom, and the collectors of the rents of the King's lands take credit for payment of these. i. Sir Alexander Fraser, who was Chamberlain and brother in law to The Bruce, was the first baron of Durris.
During Montrose's wars the Castle of Durris was occupied by Forbes of Leslie, whom Spalding describes as a 'gryte covenanter', and fearing that his house might be plundered by the royalists, he had the greater part of his effects hidden, or carried away to a place of greater Safety. As anticipated the castle was Soon afterwards assailed and taken by the Gordons. l. This was in 1639, and in 1644 the place was Subjected to a similar raid. m. But it was upon Sunday the 17th March in the following year that Durris suffered most severely, for the Marquis of Montrose, then on his march Southward to Dundee, plundering and burning the lands and houses of such of the covenanters as lay in his route, set fire to 'the place, lauche bigging, and haill cornes (of Durris), and Spolzeit the haill ground of hors, nolt, scheip, and other goodis.' n.
