OS1/19/3/3 Banchory Banchory Lieut. Col. [Lieutenant Colonel] Ramsay Banchory Lodge Mr. James Stewart Inspector Mr. William Imray Banchory Sir James Burnett Bart. [Baronet] of Leys 005.12 A large village on the turnpike road to Kincardine O Neil, 17 miles west of Aberdeen. It contains an Episcopalian and a Dissenting Chapel, one School, three Hotels, a Post Office, and two branch banks. The houses are all substantial buildings, principally slated. It is thus described in the Statistical Account. "The new or Arbeadie village was begun by three individuals in 1805, 1807, and 1809, and contains a Dissenting Chapel, a post office, a prison, two schools, three Inns, and in the immediate vicinity, a branch of the Bank of Scotland." Since the above was written considerable changes have occurred. The dwellings which composed the old village have been almost totally removed to admit of the construction of the Deeside Railway, the Station and workshops of the Company have been erected on its site, and the principal portion of the village now known as Arbeadie has been built. The name is thus applied to the present village. There are ten markets held annually at the Market-Stance here, which is situated about a quarter of a mile east of the Established Church. One of these is still known as St. Ternan's Market.

The place at first view seems but a small opening, giving vent to a torrent on the southern side of the hill; but turning rather abruptly to the left, it presents a spacious hollow about two miles in length, stretching into the very centre of the hill; with steep sides and a marshy bottom. 'Vpoun the xxviij [28] of October, "says the "Diurnal of Occurents" (p. [page] 73. Ed. Among the latter was the Earl "who, being aged and corpulent, and by reason of the throng which pressed him, expired in the hands of his takers." "He was tane by Andro Reidpath, one of our Soverane Ladie's gaird" The Queen herself is reported to have been present, and to have beheld the battle from a rocky seat overlooking the whole field, still called Queen Mary's Chair. Its banks are low and mostly barren. The soil occassionally covered by it is mossy presenting tufts of bog-myrtle, and stunted willows. Their still exists a small island near its southern shore, which is said to be artificial, founded on oak piles with the ruins of "ancient buildings and an oven upon it," and to have no traditions or notices which throw light on its history." Extract from Statistical Account. Since the above was written the loch has been drained and the space which it covered converted into arable land. During its progress several bronze pots, horns etc, were found in the soil, and are thus described in a small book entitled "Legends of Leys" "During its progress there were dug up some curious specimens of household utensils, as well as the horns and bones of an extinct species of deer. A canoe hollowed out of one log of wood, overturned, and with about half a dozen (the exact number is four bronze pots of antique shape lying beneath it, was found in a position which seemed to indicate its having been upset in crossing the loch, no doubt when the encampment of the first draining party broke up and returned to the old house. The canoe fell to pieces on being exposed to the air; the bronze utensils are of course carefully preserved, (and are still to be seen at Crathes Castle) The antlers of the deer are splendid specimens, and are evidently those of a huge species not now existing in Scotland."

They occupy nearly the whole surface and appear to have been a fortified dwelling of no great solidity, probably the resort or the residence of the family of Leys, before their fortalice was built at Crathes. It is sometimes called the "Gow or Goo-house," perhaps from the number of gulls which built their nest on the island" - Extract from Statistical Account. Since the above was written the foundation of this place has been excavated and found to be formed of the following materials in successive layers from the surface thus,- Clay, Brushwood, Sand, Stones, Brushwood, and Oak Piles. Owing to this, neither the foundation nor plan of the building can now be traced.

OS1/19/3/78 [Page] 78 Parish of Banchory Ternan [initialed] EHC I have fully investigated this Antiquity and questioned Sir James Burnett of Leys & his Factor, who both were present when the excavations on this island were made. From their testimony it cannot be doubted that this island was formed artificially, & answers in every particular to the "Crannoges" lately discovered by Antiquarians in Ireland & Switzerland. In every specimen found as yet a most wonderful similarity has existed, the materials being the same and invariably supported on piles of oak; and scarcely any Crannoge has been discovered without the remains of a primitive canoe being found beside it, which probably gave the means of transit between the island and the shore; besides this cooking utensils, bones of animals and also horns of deer, and weapons have generally been found about them. In all these respects the present instance agrees for at the excavations in 1851 its timber construction was placed beyond a doubt while in the Loch itself was found the primitive canoe, 6 Bronze pots (of which 4 are at Crathes, and 2 in the museum at Edinburgh) horns and the bones and jaws of a deer, and a bronze axe-head. There can therefore be no doubt that this is a "Crannoge", and it probably dates back to the 10th century, or thereabouts. - The term "Goo-house" is purely a local one & of modern date, but it is well known to every one in the district. OS1/19/3/98 Supposed Encampment (Supposed) Encampment (Supposed) Encampment (Supposed) Encampment Statistical Account Mr William Imray, Banchory Mr William Falconer, Cairnton Cottage 005.11 "At Cairnton, on the east end of the hill and ancient wood of Trustach, near a steep bank of the Dee, there is a slightly hollow place, overgrown with birch, about 150 yards square, which, on its north and only open side, has two ramparts of earth, each 300 yards long, from 10 to 15 yards high, and 16 broad. They converge from the bank on each side, and complete two sides of a square, the rest of which is formed by the nature of the ground. They do not, however, meet, but leave an entrance at the angle about 20 yards wide. A large body of men might lie within them without being easily observed. The position is moderately elevated, and commands a pass between the heights of Inchmarlo and the Dee, through which the present roads lies. It overlooks almost every approach, and has the river immediately behind, and the Canny at a little distance in the haugh below. No traditions respecting it exist, and, as the spot is rather sequestered, it is very little known. But it has evidently been a strong and well-selected encampment. Its massive structure and general appearance, compared with their undoubted remains in other parts of the country, incline some to think that it owes its origins to the Romans. The name of the place (Cairnton) would indicate, perhaps, the site of a battle, but there are no cairns or tumuli at present to be seen." Extract from Statistical Account.

After the flood of 1829, it had fallen into such disrepair, that an iron truss arch was substituted for the wooden, at the expense of the trustees of the Stonehaven Road. Originally the lands of the Hirn in this parish were mortified to build and support an hospital for old men and women, but finding there would be little necessity for such a building the funds were used to provide suitable teachers for the young. Latterly the Trustees of the mortification resigned their right to the Baronets of Leys, under the stipulation that a certain sum of money would be paid yearly to two teachers in the parish. Subject to this agreement the teacher of this school receives annually £18.

Subsequently an agreement was made between the family of Leys and the Trustees of the mortification, in which, for a certain yearly sum, the latter relinquished their right to the lands, in favour of the former. Subject to this agreement, the sum of £36 annually is paid to the teachers of this, and Lady Burnett's School.

[Lieutenant Colonel] Ramsay, Banchory Lodge Mr James Stewart, Inspector of Poor Mr William Imray, Banchory 006.09 In the Statistical Account this chapel is thus mentioned. "The Church [last word underlined] which existed at the Reformation, was placed in the burying-ground near the brink of the river. The only remains of this ancient building, are a fragment of the font bearing the arms of the Abbey of Arbroath, and one or two other unimportant relics." And again, "It", the old village of Banchory, "is mentioned as existing in 1324, and it probably originated in the habitations required by the vicar or his curate and other assistants who served the Chapel of St. Ternan [last four words underlined] in early Catholic times." The "Church" and "Chapel" seem to be identical, but there are now no exisiting remains. A small square building in the graveyard - the burying-ground of the Douglass' of Tilquhillie - is supposed to be within the bounds of the ancient building. It had been erected at a period long prior to 1324 as appears from the following extract. - Extract from Deed of Gift by William the Lyon executed between the years 1178 and 1203.- "William, by the Grace of God King of the Scots, has given - to God and the Church of St. Thomas at Arbroath and the Monks thereof - the Church of Bencoryn [last three words underlined]- with all rights belonging in land and water, in meadow and pasture, and all tithes and all rights." In 1502 Alexander Burnat of Leys obtained a lease from the Abbey of Arbroath of the tithes of the Church of Banquhory Terne [last four words underlined], subject to the condition of keeping the buildings in repair. In the graveyard, close to the burying-ground of the Douglass' of Tilquhillie there is a small octagonal watch-house, built for the purpose of protecting the dead from the resurrectionists.

Refers to Hill of Corfiedly - there appears to have been confusion over spelling of this feature (originally Corfedlie). BanchoryTernan volume was altered to agree with Kincardine O'Neill Namebook and original entries altered. Here in Index mistake was made (missing end letter y)
