"In the Advocates' Library there has been found a document confirmative of what was formerly traditional, that the distinctive appellation of Devenick is derived from a wonder working Saint of the name of Davanicus, who flourished about the year 887, and of whose ministrations this parish was at one period the Scene."
The figure of the parish is extremely irregular. It is situated partly in Kincardineshire, and partly in Aberdeenshire, - the river Dee being here the boundary of both counties. The most elevated part of the Lollohill, the easternmost of the range of Grampians, is in the Kincardineshire division of the parish, and afforded a station for the gentlemen who were employed by Government to make the trigonometrical survey of the island. About three miles of this parish is bounded by the sea. The Coast is bold, rocky, and picturesque. Its undulations are numerous, with many inlets and projections frequented by migratory Sea-fowls, and wild pigeons, but has no caves of great depth inland, and affords no safe anchorage, and only three harbours for fishing boats, - Findon, Portlethen, and Downees. At Portlethen, in favourable weather, lime and coals may be landed from small vessels, but the road from the shore is very steep, insomuch that the tenant of the adjoining farm has erected a machine for bringing up Sea-Weed for manure. The climate is healthy, and no disease is peculiar to the district."

This Cairn was entirely removed in the year 1815 by Mr. John Troupe the then Occupier, and father of Mr. John Troupe, the present Occupier of Hillhead farm. A Kist containing only bones was found in the Centre of the Cairn on the ground surface. The Cairn was composed of large granite stones, and was situated an eighth of a mile North of Hillhead farm house. |

This cairn is situated 15 chains due east from Hillhead farm house and is the most northerly of a group of three Cairns lying in nearly a straight line of a 1/4 mile in length. This cairn presents a large base with an irregularly flat surface, showing that it had never been finished, or that the upper part had been taKen away. Mr John Troupe says it has not been altered for the last 50 years, a statement confirmed by the appearance of the stones which are covered with ancient moss and lichen. |

[Note referring to line 7, sixteenth century] -- Present Bridge
[Note referring to line 5, 1448] -- Old Bridge
Of the Old Bridge of Dee
Mr Kennedy in his Annals of Aberdeen, says, This Bridge was among the earliest and most important works
of public utility, reared by the hand of benevolence, for the advantage not only of the town of Aberdeen, but of the whole
country, and is a lasting monument of the liberality of the original founders. At an early period, the inhabitants of
Aberdeen seem to have experienced the inconvenience of passing the river Dee, by the common ferry, which in ancient times
was at the Craiglug. About the year 1448, the Alderman and baillies designed a bridge over the river, a little above this
ferry, and it would Seem Some progress had been made in the undertaKing, but was afterwards relinquished by the Community
- About the beginning of the Sixteenth Century, William Elphinston, bishop of Aberdeen, projected the present bridge, of
seven arches, over the river, distant about 2 miles from the town, and commenced the building, but died before the
structure was far advanced. Bishop Gavin Dunbar, on Succeeding to the episcopal see, recommenced the worK, which
had remained neglected from the time of the founders death, and, in the space of a few years, completed the building
upon his own expense. Having accomplished this noble undertaKing about the year 1527, he, sometime afterwards,
delivered over the bridge to the charge of the magistrates, council and community, and, at the sametime, presented to them
a grant of the lands of Ardlair, in the parish of Clat, as a fund for supporting the fabric, and for rebuilding
it at any future period, if that should become necessary.
In this age of superstition, according to the custom of the time, the bridge was provided with a chapel, dedicated
to the Virgin Mary, erected on the north end, that travellers who passed and repassed, might have an opportunity
of exercising solemn acts of devotion at its altar, of which Sir William Rae was chaplin. There belonged to this
institution a silver Crucifix, chalice of silver, an image of the Virgin, over gilt, three embroidered napkins, and other
Sacred utensils, some of which were preserved at the Reformation, when the chapel was probably demolished.
On the South end of this fabric, there was, in ancient times, a porch, with a watch tower over it, in
which the Citizens mounted guard, in the time of commotion in the country, or on the alarm of the plague
spreading northwards, that strangers might be prevented from entering the town, without obtaining permission -
In the time of the civil war, in the seventeenth century, the bridge was often a disputed post by contending
armies. In the year 1679, the porch was ornamented with the town's coat of arms, and that of Bishop Elphinston
the original founder placed over it. About the beginning of the eighteenth century the bridge had fallen so
much into decay, that it became necessary to rebuild the greatest part of it, particularly the arches & superstructure
- In the year 1718, the work was commenced, and in the course of the four subsequent years, completed,
as it stands at the present time. The stones used in the worK were imported, by sea from Moray, and
from the frith of Forth, which circumstance will account for the materials of which the bridge is composed
being different in quality from any in this part of the Country. It was finished on the south end with
an elegant porch of dressed stone, almost of the same construction with the original one; but, about the year
1773, it was removed for the purpose of affording more convenient access to carriages. the bridge is a
light building, of seven semicircular ribbed arches; but although it is regularly and substantially built, according
to

to the rules of architecture, there are not two of the piers finished, in the upper part of the parapet, on
the same parallel line, which can be easily discovered by the eye. The bridge was long complained of
as incommodious for modern wheel carriages, by reason of its narrowness, but that has lately been
remedied by certain improvements on the carriage way. The line of road to the bridge, from the north
was also indirect and inconvenient, but of late years, the approach has been made in a direct line
to it over the hollow grounds, by means of a bridge, which is finished with a handsome cast
metal railing. On the south end the approach has also been improved, and made direct, since
the turnpike road was completed. "There was a battle fought at the Bridge of Dee in April 1639, between
the Covenanters & an army raised by the Viscount of Aboyne; in which the latter were defeated.

Several circles or rings of rubble and earth were discovered at this place by Mr Thomson of Banchory some years back. They resembled the remains of ancient British dwellings found in other parts of Scotland, & were in all probability the remains of some early settlement.

On a granite Tablet on E [East] side of the Tower is the following inscription:-
"In memory of John Irvine Boswell of Balmuto & Kingcausie. Born 28th Dec [December] 1785, Died 23rd Decr [December] 1860. A man who loved his Saviour, walked steadfastly with his God, and whose rule of life was "Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ".
In early life he joined the Coldstream Guards and carried their Colours in the Battle of Talavera. Retiring from the Army he settled at Kincausie and lived to transfer the natural barreness of the estate into luxuriant fertility. He will long be remembered in the district for the enlightened zeal which he displayed in the introduction of all the improvements of modern agriculture : and did not confine his attention to his own Estates, his Knowledge and experience being ever at the Service of his neighbours, rich and poor aliKe. In every position & relation of life he maintained, with rare fidelity, the Character of a Christian Gentleman, and he died in peace trusting simply in the merits of his Saviour for acceptance with his God.
His sorrowing widow, Margaret Irvine Boswell, erected this monument as a Solace in her bitter bereavement. AD 1862." |

[Note] --"Achorties.
'Auchorties' - There is on the South side of the parish, a Druidical temple worthy of notice. It is situated on an eminence, about a mile
and a half from the coast, and was till within these few years remarkably perfect. It consisted of three circles of Stones within
each other. The outer circle, which was about 45 feet in diameter, consisted of twelve larger stones, placed on end. The inner circles
were composed of smaller ones, placed in the same manner, and between the two outermost, upon the east side, there was
a Stone chest, sunken in the earth, about three feet long, and one and a half wide, which, having been accidentally uncovered
by a country man, he found an urn, which disclosed nothing but a little dust or ashes. A little farther down the hill, towards the
South east, there is another erection of the same kind. It consists of one circle of pretty large Stones." -- (Old Stat Act [Statistical Account] Vol. [Volume] 4. Page 456.)

"In August 1817, an ancient Stone coffin was discovered in repairing a road on the farm of Clashfarquhar the property of Mr Thomson of Banchory. The Spot lies about a quarter of a mile from the Sea, and on the top of a bank of gravel. The Coffin was composed of eight stones, two on each side, one at each end and two forming the cover, and contained the remains of a human Skeleton and two vases. The Skeleton although a good deal decayed appeared from the jaws to be that of an adult. The larger of the vases, which was broken by the labourers, must have been about ten inches in diameter and five in height. The smaller is Six and a half Inches high and 5 across the mouth. They appear to be made of pounded granite or Mica Slate, commonly found in that vicinity and covered with a coating of clay, which is ornamented with small patterns executed with some care. The vases are as round as if turned in a lathe, and appear to have been merely dried in the Sun. At what period this deposit was made must be purely matter of conjecture." -- (New Stat. Act. [Statistical Account] 182.)
The above were found at the place marked 1 on Trace. In the Gravel Pit marked 2 there have been found

Supposed site of St Mary's Chapel |
Supposed Site of St Mary's Chapel |
Revd [Reverend] A. Fleming (Blairs College)
Mr William Duncan, Aberdeen. (late Treasurer of Police.) |
004.06 |
"Neere to the bridge stood of old lykewayes a chappell dedicated to Mary as tutelar to this bridge, but her chappell is long Since taken away, yit the bridge is yit Standing extant." (Description of bothe Touns of Aberdeen Page 19.) (Gordon's 1661)
"In this age of Superstition, according to the custom of the time, the bridge was provided with a chapel, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, erected on the north end, that travellers who passed and re-passed might have an opportunity of exercising solemn acts of devotion at the alter, of which Sir William Rae was chaplain." (Kennedys Annals Page 417-18.)
"This Prelate (Bishop Gavin Dunbar) who began his Episcopate in 1518 Soon proceeded with Spirit to the building of the Bridge. - The earliest date legible upon it is 1520, the latest of the first erection 1526. - And And that the passengers might have every accommodation for praying for Bishop Dunbar, a Chapel was erected on its north end." (Survey of Aberdeen by Archibald Courage) (Page 40-1)
The above Chapel is supposed to have Stood on the west side of the River Dee, on an elevated piece of ground, north of, and close to north end of the present Bridge. Not a vestige of the building is now to be Seen.
It is extremely difficult now to obtain any certain information as to it's site, but from the fact that there is a little enclosure, (not planted,) at the place indicated on trace, and that this enclosure stands on the Eastern side of the Bridge, I believe that this is the veritable site of this Chapel. There are no old Plans which show the site. -
