This noted Cave has a very narrow opening through which one Could hardly Creep on his knees & hands. It rises Steep & lofty within & runs into the Bowels of the earth to the depth of 255 measured feet; the height at the entrance may be about threefeet, but rises with to 18 or 20, & the breadth may vary in the Same proportions. The side & Stoney bottom of this Cave is strewed with bones of Men, Women & Children, the Sad relics of the ancient inhabitants of the Island 200 in number; Who were Slain on the following Occasion:- The Macdonalds of the Isle of Eigg, a people dependent on Clan-Ronald, had done some injury to the Laird of Mac-Leod. The tradition of the Isle Says, that it was by a personal attack on the Chieftain in which his back was broken. But that of the other Isles bears, more probably, that injury was offered to two or three of the Mac-Leods Who, landing upon Eigg, & using Some freedom with the young Women, were Seized by the Islanders, bound hand & foot & turned adrift in a boat which the winds & waves Safely Conducted to Skye. To avenge the offense given, McLeod Sailed with Such a body of men as rendered resistance hopeless. The natives, fearing the vengeance Concealed themselves in this Cavern, & after a Strict Search the McLeods went on board their Galleys after doing what mischief they Could, Concluding the inhabitants had left the Isle, & betaken themselves to the long Island or Some of Clan Ronald's other possessions. But next morning they espied from the vessels a man upon the [Continued p. 23] |

the Island & immediately landing again they traced his retreat by the marks of his footsteps, a light Snow being unhappily on the Ground. Mac-Leod then Surrounded the Cavern, Summoned the Subterranean Garrison & demanded that the individuals Who had offended him Should be delivered up to him. This was peremptorily refused. The Chieftain then Caused his people to divert the Course of a rill of Water which falling over the entrance of the Cave, would have prevented his proposed revenge. He then Kindled at the entrance of the Cavern a huge fire Composed of wood & ferns & maintained it with unrelenting assiduity until all within were destroyed by Suffocation. The date of this dreadful deed must have been recent if one may judge from the fresh appearance of those relics.

[North] & on the east side of a Cart-road Stands the remains of an old Roman Catholic Chapel, Now used by the Catholics of the Island as a place of interment. |

This stone coffin was discovered about 12 years ago under a large pile of stones which stood on the top of a small knoll situated at Galmisdale Point, about 8 chains W.N.W. [West North West] from the pier and about 12 chains N. [North] from Sgeir na Cleite. The size, & manner of construction is much the same as that found near Nead-na-feannaige when opened it was found to be empty Except the top, it is still intact & is only covered with sods a few inches in thickness. |

At a point, in wood, about 2 chains N.E. [North East] of Nead na Feannaige an object was discovered nearly 2 ft. [feet] under the surface, which from the manner in which it was constructed is supposed to have been a stone Coffin, It was discovered by workmen while improvements were being made about 15 years ago, It was composed of a number of flat stones placed much in the same manner as those in an ordinary culvert, Its length was about 5 ft. [feet] breadth about 2 ft. [feet] & depth about about 15 inches, It was found to contain nothing beyond a small quantity of what seemed to be dry earth. |
