019 ; 029 ; 030 ; 041 ; 053 ; 054 ; 068 | This is the largest fresh water loch in Scotland being about 27 miles long and averaging nearly a mile in breadth and extending from Fortaugustus to Lochend. It is said to be nearly 200 fathoms deep in some parts, and very deep throughout and has never been known to have been frozen. For its whole length it is used in connection with the Caledonian Canal and it is navigable for vessels drawing a deep draught of water. This loch is wholly situated in the district of Glen Albyn, and in the parishes of Dores, Inverness, Urquhart & Glenmoriston, and Boleskine & Abertarff; but for about 5 miles north of Fortaugustus it is wholly in the latter parish. |
