A very bold remarkable hollow situated near the junction of the Parish of Lagan and Kilmonivaig on the south side of the Buidhe Aonach range between the hills of Creag Maghaidh and Carn Laith. It rises almost perpendicular to a tremendous height; its whole face presenting one solid mass of rock interspersed with large breathe of snow which on account of its great height scarcely ever thaw. It presents a very formidable appearance when viewed from the surrounding Country. There is a small loch at its base from which Allt a Choire Àrd Dhoire flows. This stream has its banks straddled with natural wood and it is from this that it takes its name. - A deep narrow ravine running from the Corie on the N.E. [North East] side of Creag Maghaidh - (at the watershed) - form a very peculiar feature and is called the window of Choire Àrd Dhoire. It is the property of Cluny Macpherson of Cluny Castle. |

EXAMINATION OFFICE
By further Investigation it appears that the change of spelling on the margin of sheet 127 was caused by a Request from Captain Bolland R.E. [Royal Engineers] - on 126 he has the two names Sròn na Glaoidh, and Druim na Glaoidh, and this led to the assimilating of Sheets 126 and 127. - As all the other words in the Composition of the two names Sròn na Glaoidh, and Druim na Glaoidh are written as pure Gaelic would it not be as well to assimilate the spelling on Sheet 112 and write the name Druim na Glaoidh, as on Sheet 126 ?

A very small rocky knoll on the west side of the Roy close to the foot bridge leading between Bohuntine and Bohenie
The origin of the name is told in the following story given to me by the highlanders of Lochaber. About two hundred years ago there lived at Keppoch (Keppoch is the name of the ground surrounding the junction of Glen Spean and Glen Roy and was previous to the Rebellion of 1645 an Estate owned by the McDonalds or MacDonalls of Keppoch and his clan) two brothers MacDonalds or MacDonalls. estate and clan was married and had two Children. The younger also resided on the estate living on a small farm the property of his brother, he to was married and had six sons, all grown up. It appears that the brother who possessed the small farm and large family wished to possess more, in fact he could not understand why he ought not to possess the estate as well. So he formed a dark conspiracy in conjunction with his six sons by which they were to get rid of the Chief and his family and obtain the estate for themselves. They murdered the Chief and his family but they found that by doing so they made matters worse than they previously were. Songs were composed and sung before the surrounding Chiefs by certain Eoin Lom or bare John for the purpose of inciting them to revenge their neighbours death. When the seven murderers saw that their lives were not safe they fled to the hills and it was at Torran na Mionna that they swore by the dirk to be true to each other. |

They lived for 7 years in caves in the surrounding hills of Lochaber; at the end of that time thinking all was forgotten they returned to Keppoch.
In the mean time Eoin Lom was not idle after using all the means in his power during the seven years to have his chiefs death revenged, he at last succeeded in obtaining a party of men from MacDonald Lord of the Isles and some also from McDonald of Glengarry. He left Glengarry Castle at dusk and arrived at Keppoch at midnight, he put the murderers to death and brought the seven heads to Glengarry. They were washed in a well on the south west side of Loch Oich and were then presented to McDonald Lord of the Isles in Invergarry Castle. The well in which they were washed is called Tobar nan Ceann or the well of the heads; it has a handsome monument over it on which is recorded a short description of the event in four languages. |
