"The name of this parish now formerly spelt Tannadyse but in more modern times it is spelt Tannadice. Both are obviously resolvable into Taynatus, a Gaelic word which signifies "a low warm green plat upon the water." A better description could not be given in any number of words, of the low sheltered bottom, situated on the South Esk, on which the Church, Manse & Kirktown stand. The surface of the parish gradually rises in undulating ridges to the foot of the Grampians - And is bounded by the parish of Lethnot & Navar on the North; Cortachy & Clova parish on the West; Kirriemuir And Oathlaw parishes on the South; and on the East & South East by the parishes of Fearn & Careston."
New Stat [Statistical] Account
The parish is well supplied with water, the River South Esk and Noran Water - and the only Antiquities in the parish are a Circle of Stones of the prehistoric

On Glenogil Est. [Estate] Plan this name is applied between the Moss, West of Mount Sned, & the Trusty Burn, and it is extended as far west, along the face of the hill, as a line about direct north from the Trigl. [Trigonometrical] Pole on "Duthriss Hill" (Trace 10) The name however is pointed out by persons - quoted as being about the top of the Moss, & from the Shades being a corruption of Shed or Sheddings it has been applied to that part, although it does not appear to belong to the other Estate on the Lethnot side. It is not understood to apply on the Lethnot side as adopted on the Glenogil Est. [Estate] Plan, by the personal authorities quoted. |

This name as well as the "Bogs of Boggandure" is well known in Glenogil, but like the name "Bogancur", in Glenmoye, the character of the ground will not admit of distinction from that of R.H.P. [Rough Heathy Pasture] The places are springy in parts with R.H.P. [Rough Heathy Pasture] interspersed. Eddiechockertie stands below "Naked Tam" adjoining the West side of Keillor, |

The southern extremity of Glen Ogil is well understood to terminate at "Blackpot Bridge" (25.11 Trace 6 1/2500 work) The Noran flows through this Glen and forms a tolerably regular valley from the place where the "Trusty Burn" joins it, at Burnroot, (Sheet 18.15 6 inch) to Blackpot Bridge. The name has not been applied further north than Burnroot, which Mr. Lyon of Glenogil considers the proper bounds of the Glen, but in common usage that name is given to the whole of the Glenogil property in the hills, viz. to the head of the Noran, and the head of Trusty Burn, below the Dog Hillock The lower part of Glenogil, belonging to Mr. Lyon, is a cultivated glen with numerous farms & other habitations, all of which are comprehended in Glenogil. |

While everyone else calls this Pinderachy the Estate Map of Glenogil & the Factor for that Estate calls it Panderachy, a form never used in the slightest degree in general usage of the name. The hill is one of the most prominent, next to St. Arnold's Seat, towards the low grounds, and is consequently well known in the country around, where it may be observed that the form adopted is the customary one. The Estates of Fearn Glenogil & Auchnacree March on this Hill but the Plan of Glenogil is the only one of the three on which the name appears. |

Mains [note]
There is a tradition that a Castle stood at the trees in the field on the East of the Mains
but according to the proprietor, who is familiar with the tradition, there never has been any foundations seen in his time - as
far back as fifty years & more. Monnipennie , in his enumeration of Castles & Towers of the County,
mentions "Wester Ogyall", which Mr. Jervoise, the author of " Memorials of Angus & Mearns" &c, in reply to a
communication on the subject, considers to have been the residence of one of the Cadets of the more
powerful Lords of the district, and that many other "Castles & Towers" noticed by Monniepennie were
similar. |

This so called "Ring" is a circle of boulder
stones of the class connected with the prehistoric
Era - and about 5 chains to the northward
is another of the same character, but smaller
in diameter and formed of rather smaller stones.
Again about 3 chains to the north, is a
solitary boulder stone (not noticed on the Plan).
I conceive these objects to have no connection with the Gallows.

This steading is upon the old steading of Cairnton, while the old place or steading of Burnside stands to the south-east. As stated by the Proprietor the farm house is generally called Burnside although really upon the farm of Cairnton. Every one now refers to this as Burnside - the name of the old thatched house to the south east being dropped. In the Valuation Roll the names

of both farms, now held by one Tenant, are given. This is a particularity which often occurs in the County but in this case the name of one of the farms has been reversed, and the proper name to the proper Burnside dropped, and sure to be eventually lost sight of from the importance of the farm steading compared with the insignificance of the now Cotter house which is the Burnside proper. The Cotter house may not be a permanent house - it is not considered so and the only way of retaining the name of Cairnton with propriety appears to be by adopting both names to the present farm house of the lands of Cairnton & Burnside, as given in the Roll and adopted on the Examination Trace. |

A good farm steading on the Inshewan Estate the property of Mr. Ogilvy East of the farm house but upon the lands of E. [Easter] Memus there is a Standing Stone of remarkable appearance, but all inquiry leads to it being erected for a rubbing stone for Cattle. This is the proprietor's opinion and the Tenants. No mention is made of this in any Account of Tannadice. There is another rubbing stone on Derachy Farm in a field called Denside. |

This Law is upon the farm of Meikle Coul in a field called West Bank. The Law or Tumulus is, although ploughed over, very remarkable and still regular, being about 10 or 15 feet high. There is nothing known among the people of the place - or in the Parish so far as could be ascertained of Urns or Stone Coffins being found here. The hillock appears to have never been opened. |

"On the North side of the Esk, very near the place where the bridge of Shielhill now stands formerly stood the Castle of Quiech, the residence of the Earls of Buchan, who, in ancient times, had an extensive property in this County. The situation is romantic, and was still more adapted for being the seat of a feudal chieftain, by the security which it promised, than by its pleasantness. The Castle was built on a precipitous rock, immediately overhanging the river. This rock appears as if insulated by nature, a stream pours down through a deep chasm on each side of it. No vestiges of this ancient Castle are now discernible. A humble cottage occupies its place. Within these few years part of one of the walls of the chapel was standing. It was built with hewn stones, but they have been lately carried off & used some other way."

but popular story to support the name of Quiech Castle

As the remains are near "Shielhill Bridge" I
think it will be best to leave them unnamed on

overhangs the Esk, on the North side of the river. Part of the Castle forms the walls of the cottages which now occupy its place. These are about 3 feet thick the door & window lintels are of old hewn ashler, and one of them is dated 1686. A Chapel is also said to have been here in old times, and a fountain at a little distance is known by the name of St. Colm, to whom the Chapel may have been inscribed"
Land of the Lindsays
The northern gable of the Cot-house between the White Burn & the Black Burn, where these streams enter the Esk, is of great thickness, and according to the above, quoted from the "Land of the Lindsays", is part of the Castle of Quiech. There is nothing remarkable in the appearance of the Gable Wall, which is dressed &c. on the outside like the ordinary walls of the house but it is generally understood as stated by the authorities - personal, to be a part of the Old Castle of Quiech. The author of the "Land of the Lindsays" omits the name (Quiech) in describing the Castle, and refers to a very old thorn tree as being at Glenquiech "where the "furious Graham" & the "brave Rose" fell in deadly combat & where the fair Matilda" &c. It is evident that the reference made to the above as Glenquiech, is a mistake for Quiech Castle, which is a name also for another Castle in the County at Alyth about 10 Miles distant. (See Old Statl. Acct. [Statistical Account] & Fullarton's Gazetteer, which call it Quiech Castle.) |

There is no definite information to be
had of the Chapel in connexion with the
Castle of Quiech. Upon the authority of Mr.
Bowman, Shielhill, there were quantities of bones
found about 50 years ago at the angle of
the woods meeting near the Castle, which skirt
the Burns - The White & Black Burns.
There is a Spring in a steep bank
East of "Shielhill Bridge", but it is not
identified with the name "St. Colm" given
in the Land of the Lindsays, nor is this name
known to anybody in the Parish.
The old Thorn tree alluded to in

In the "Land of the Lindsays" the following appears in reference to this name & the Castle of Barnyards. "The nearest residents of Finhaven (a Castle in an adjoining Ph. [Parish]), were the Lindsays of the Haugh of Tannadice or Barnyards. The Castle of Barnzaird (as it is termed in Monipennies) stood within two miles, as the crow flies, of the Castle of Finhaven, & towards the close of the last century was represented by two archways in the Haugh, a little north west of the present farm house, which was built from its ruins." The Haugh is commonly called Barnyards from belonging to that farm and |

In 1857 Mr. J. Mr. Ogilvy of Inshewan Propr. [Proprietor] |

"A hill in the neighbourhood of Achlouchrie receives the name of Castle Hill. Like the Site of the Castle of Quiech, it overhangs the river which here runs in a deep bed, by reason of the high rocks on either side. A fosse, still 13 feet deep & 30 feet wide forms a semicircle round this hill. This it is supposed had been dug with a design to bring in water from the river for defending the place. It would seem, however, that there never has been any building here as there are no marks of foundations"
Old Statistical Account.
"In the vicinity of Achlouchrie, an eminence which still bears the name of Castle Hill, & overhangs a deep gorge of the river, & has round its base a semicircular fosse 13 feet deep & 30 ft. [feet] wide was the site of another ancient but extinct Castle. Fullarton's Gazetteer. |

The fosse or hollow around this hill is of artificial appearance and of greater depth than 13 ft. [feet] on the East side - it is nearer 20 ft. [feet]. On the north west the hollow where the river water might be conveyed into the fosse round the hill, is much above the level of the South Esk. The proprietor Mr. Ogilvy of Inshewan, thinks it is probable that at some period there had been a "building on the Castle Hill, as there was a moat all round it." The name is well known among the people. |

In sinking this well a few years ago deep unnatural hollows were got supposed to be the result of spontaneous combustion of which the following is said in the Gazetteer (Fullarton's) viz. - "A stratum of iron pyrites, at the depth of 1½ or 2 ft. "At a place called the Haer Cairn, in the Howmuir wood (almost directly north of the present gate) and at Haerland Faulds several rude stone coffins & urns containing human bones were found about 20 years ago." Land of the Lindsays.
This was a hillock or Tumulus about 30 years ago as stated by the authorities (personal) quoted. When levelling it at that time several rude stone coffins and urns were found, containing human bones. Several persons now in the locality saw both the urns and the stone coffins. The site is marked by a hollow place in the wood. |
