033 "Near the Eastern extremity of the Parish is a spot of ground, commonly called the Deil's Hows. i.e. the Devil's Hollows. It has received this name from its being supposed that the devil has here given some remarkable displays of his presence & power. It is a small hollow surrounded with moorish ground."

In sinking this well a few years ago deep unnatural hollows were got supposed to be the result of spontaneous combustion of which the following is said in the Gazetteer (Fullarton's) viz. - "A stratum of iron pyrites, at the depth of 1½ or 2 ft. [feet] from the surface, in a small hollow called the Deil's Hows has repeatedly exhibited the phenomenon of spontaneous combustion & thrown out from its vicinity pieces of earth 150 or 160 stones in weight."
