[Situation] In the south end of the Co. [County] of Forfar.
A parish near the southern extremity of Forfarshire bounded on the north by Inverarity on the east by Monikie and Monifieth; On the south by Monifieth by the main body of Dundee and by Mains and on the west by Mains by the detached parts of Dundee and by Tealing. Its form is exceedingly irregular a projection going off westward from its south end and all the detached part of Dundee being an indentation on its west side. Its greatest length from north to south measured over the middle of the Dundee indentation is about 4½ miles. its greatest breadth from east to west in a line over the parish church and falling upon the southern part of the indentation is about 3½ miles, its mean breadth measured at intervals on the sort of segment which it forms round the indentation is about 1¼ mile and its area is about 7 square miles. Fithie Water pursuing a south-easterly direction runs two miles between it on the right bank and Tealing and the detached part of Dundee on the left and afterwards flows ¾ of a mile through the interior leaving the parish just after having split its water to form an islet, Murroes Burn coming in near the north-west

extremity 1½ mile below its source in Tealing runs 4 miles south-eastward and southward sweeps closely past the parish Church and a mile after leaving the parish falls into the united stream of the Dighty and the Fithie. A large part of the parish was formerly marsh and moss but has to a considerable extent been reclaimed and made subject to the plough and has all been so far drained as no longer to send up pestiferous miasmata into the atmosphere. Murroes is in the presbytery of Dundee and synod of Angus and Mearns. There are no detached parts of this parish nor are there any detached portions of any parish within this parish |

Wedderburn Castle
The old Castle of Easter Powrie, or Wedderburn,
which stood a short distance N. [North] East of this, is
thought to have belonged to the ancient earls of
Angus, from whom the Earl of Airlie derives his
descent. Be this as it may, the Castle and
barony were long the property of a family of
the name of Ogilvy, from whom they passed,
soon after the year 1600, to Alexander Wedderburne,
ancestors of the Wedderburnes of Wedderburne
and Birkhill, and the Wedderburnes of Blackness,
Barts. [Baronets] The Castle has long been wholly erased
Forfarshire Illustrated
Page 36.
Wedderburn, which is nearly leveled with the
dust, is said, at a remote period, to have
been the residence of the Gilchrists, - the ancient
and powerful thanes of Angus.

along with the shield. The only historical incident
connected with this castle which we have found recorded
occurred during the time the English held Broughty
Castle, which was September 1547 till Feby. [February] 1550.
Whilst in Possession of Broughty, the English
garrison made several foraging expeditions

their chief designation, though they are sometimes
designed Fothringhame, the present family
seat, in the united parishes of Inverarity
and Meathie. The ruins stand upon the
elevated ground on the north side of the
Vale of Dighty, at the distance of about
three miles from Dundee by the road to Forfar,
and at the head of that part of the road
which, from its steep ascent, has acquired
the popular name of "Powrie Brae". They
consist of two heavily detached parts, one
small portion of the back part being occupied
by some of the servants of the adjoining
farm. All the vaults are entire, and are
applied to various uses connected with
the business of the farm. In the front part
of the ruins, there is a large apartment, imme-
diately above the vaults, co-extensive with the
whole length and breadth of the building,
which may have been the hall. The
mouldings surrounding the chimney,
which still remain pretty entire, are not
inelegantly designed; and on the lintel
there is a scutcheon of the arms of Fothringhame
impaled with three boars' heads erased,
accompanied with two fancifully formed
letters, T.F., the initials of Thomas Fothringhame,
on a deeply moulded panel. There is no date

and among other places visited by them, Lindsay
of Pitscottie mentions this Castle of Powrie, at
that time called Wester Powrie to distinguish
it from the Castle of Easter Powrie , now
called Wedderburne"

The only memorials of the feudal times are the
remains of three old Castles, which, however,
present no remarkable peculiarities either in
structure or situation. Powrie is the property
and was long the residence, of the ancient
family of Fothringham |

Castle of Ballumbie
Forfarshire Illustrated
Page 37
A considerable part of this building , the name of
which is said to signify the "Bare Yellow Town"
remains near the modern mansion house, in the
parish of Murroes, and about 4 miles from Dundee
by the road to Brechin, which separates from
the old road to Montrose and Arbroath at Baldovie
Toll Bar. The time of the erection of the castle, and
the name of the erector, seem both to have escaped
record, though it is evident it can claim con-
siderable antiquity; and though not mentioned,
it may be presumed from its proximity to Broughty,
that it shared the same fate as the castle of Powrie.
It may be added that the ruins occupy a beautiful
position, and with the surrounding scenery
form a very pleasing picture
New Stat Acct. [Statistical Account] page 593
And Ballumbie was the seat of a family of Anglo-
Norman extraction of the name of Lovel, which has
long been extinct . . . . A tradition prevails
that Catherine Douglas, a personage of great celebrity
in ancient Scottish story, was espoused to the heir-ap-
parent of the last mentioned family, and dwelt in
* the Castle. This lady merited and has obtained unqualified
applause for the bold and magnanimous though unavailing
resistance she offered to the conspirators who assassinated
the ablest and most estimable of the Stuarts, King James 1.
of Scotland, in the Blackfriars monastery at Perth.
* This fatally successful attempt upon the life of James 1, I find from
Forfarshire illustrated, page 37, to have occurred on the night of the
20th Feby. [February] 1437. This date may serve as an index to the antiquity of
the Castle, two walls of which remain and present a very
antiquated appearance -
