alienated from the family. The Castle was inhabited so late as the year 1760. Before, and at that time it was, along with a considerable extent of territory, the property of a family of the name of Reid which was attainted for being engaged in the rebellion of that period, when the property was forfeited and sold to various purchasers. The writer was informed by a very aged person, whose grandmother in her youth was waiting-maid to Mrs Reid, that, on espying the officers of law approaching to take possession of the Castle, they secreted plate of considerable value about their persons, and, unmolested by the officers, proceeded to Dundee. Mr Reid had escaped to France, where his lady and family succeeded in joining him. Thomas Reid of Auchinleck, presented a siver communion cup to the Kirk Session of Dundee -
