[Situation] In the South end of Forfarshire.
Two parishes lying near the southern extremity of Forfarshire and united in 1799. The united parish is bounded on the north by Tealing, on the east by Murroes and Dundee, on the south by Dundee and Liff and on the west by Liff and Auchterhouse. Its extreme length from the points on the west and the east where it is first and last touched by Dighty Water is 5¾ miles its extreme breadth in a line due north & south falling upon Hilton is about 3¼ miles The whole surface of the united parish is a beautiful strath rising gently on both sides from a line along the centre to waving heights of less than 400 feet above sea level. The soil has some alluvial or haugh ground and elsewhere is in general a deep fertile black loam superincumbent on gravel clay or rock. The Strath is traversed from end to end right along the middle by Dighty Water and long took from it the name of Strathdighty. The united parish is in the presbytery of Dundee and synod of Angus and Mearns. Patrons The Crown and Mr. Laird of Strathmartine |

Close to the north wall of the Churchyard,
there was until the year 1824, a row
of ruinous farmhouses, in the gable of one
of which an ancient monument was built, bearing the
figure of a man with a head somewhat
resembling that of a hog, and carrying on
his shoulder a warlike weapon. A few
paces distant at the gate of the schoolmaster's
garden, another monument stood, upon which
two serpents were sculptured.* These monuments,
in connection with a third near Balluderon,
which is covered on one side with figures of
men on horseback, dogs and serpents, are
traditionally considered to refer to a tragical
event which occurred - nobody knows when.
The story is briefly this:- A farmer of
the adjoining mailing of Pittempton, who
was blessed with nine comely daughters,
sent one of them to a fountain on the
south side of the churchyard, as well
as the south bank of the Dighty, to fetch
him a draught of water. The girl went
but not returning quickly, another was
despatched to learn the cause of the delay
and to expedite the messenger. She did
not return either, so another and another
was sent, until all the nine sisters were
absent on the same errand. Alarmed
at the strange occurrence, the farmer
went himself, and as he approached
the well he saw the whole of his nine
daughters lying dead, and two large

snakes twining their slimey folds around them.
The astounded father stood petrified with
horror at the appalling spectacle, but
was recalled to consciousness by the hissing
of the reptiles, which were preparing
to make him their prey also, but a timely
flight saved him. The neighbours were
assembled, and a young man of the
village the lover of one of unfortunate
sisters, boldly attacked the serpents and
succeeded in wounding both. It was now
their turn to seek for safety in flight;
and wriggling their way towards the
hills, hotly pursued by the youth and
his companions, they were overtaken and
destroyed at Balluderon near the bottom
of the Sidlaw Hills. It is said the three
monuments were sculptured and erected
in commemoration of this event, which
has also conferred celebrity upon the
fountain where the sisters where killed,
as it still bears from them the name of
the "Nine Maidens Well" Extract from
Forfarshire Illustrated, page 34.
* This stone is now used as a gate post
at the entrance to a garden, opposite the
East end of the Church-yard.

[Situation] On the east side of King's Cross.
This human skeleton was found here in the course of some workmen being digging near the King's Cross about 18 years ago. The people in the locality or near it say that it was that [of] a travelling tinker who died in the neighbourhood many years ago and whose place of internment then was known. The skeleton was quite entire and in a state of good preservation.
There is a different idea suggested, as to whose remains this skeleton was, in the New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] - see extract in opposite page

Human Skeleton Found Here (Continued) |
|
|
[continued from page 42]
Attention has been awakened in this quarter to the fate of King Alpin from the following circumstance. A few weeks ago as some labourers were employed in digging near the site of the stone called the King's Cross mentioned above they discovered the skeleton of a human body within 6 or 8 yards from the cross. The few fragments of bones that remained were much decayed and not more than 18 inches beneath the surface of the ground. There were no traces of a coffin of any kind and the skull was attached or quite contiguous to the other remains. It is quite out of the question to suppose that these could be the remains of Alpin even admitting what is not improbable that after his decapitation and the head carried away as a trophy by the Picts the trunk might have been intered near the spot where the battle took place and where the stone cross was erected in memory of the engagement.

"The Castle, or Tower of Mains," as it is popularly called,
is situated on the south side of the old parochial church-
yard of Strathdighty, or Mains, but separated from
it by a narrow dell. The age of this dilapidated
edifice is unknown. Some will have it to be as old
as the middle of the 12th. century, and to have
been built by, as it was the residence of, the famous
Gilchrist, Earl of Angus, whose Countess was a sister
of William 1st. In the year 1355, we find a
gentleman of the name of Malcolm Ramsay designed
of Mains, and to him perhaps the erection of the
Castle may be ascribed, though even his era
seems too early for it. It is more likely that it
was erected by one of the family of Grahame,
who held the lands until long after the rebellion
of 1745. The first of this family who acquired
lands in this neighbourhood was John Grahame
of Balargus, a cadet of the house of Strathcarron
and Fintry, who acquired the lands of Claverhouse
and others in this neighbourhood in the year 1530.
A descendant of this gentleman acquired the lands
of Mains, and to him we are inclined to ascribe
the erection of the Tower"

"Before the Reformation the church of the parish
of Mains, under the name of Strathdighty,
as well as Mains, belonged to the Benedictine
Abbey of Arbroath, having being granted by
one of the old Earls of Angus, the cure
being served by a vicar-pensioner under the
Abbey-chapter. In the year 1799, the adjoining
parish of Strathechtyne Martyne or Strathmartine
was annexed to Mains; and in 1801, a new
church and manse were erected beside Trottick,
about a mile to the west of the Old Church
and Tower, for the accomodation of the people
of the united parishes. The Old Church,
which stood a number of years after the junction
of the parishes, was a low mean building.
It retained to the last its ancient baptismal
font which was used before the abolition of
of Popery; and in the north wall there was
a small recess furnished with an iron-door,
which had likely been used for preserving some
of the ecclesiastical utensils. Two stone coffins
lay long in the churchyard, each formed of
four stones, and strongly secured at the corners
with iron cramps. They were both of the
usual length and breadth, and two feet and
half deep; and tradition says, that in the
time of the plague, some of the infected
who died were buried in these coffins.
At present they are locked up in the burial
vault of the Grahames. Until lately the
bier was preserved, which in ancient times was
used for carrying the dead to the churchyard
for interment. Extract from Forfarshire illustrated
