The only lake or loch in the parish of considerable extent is the Loch of Kinnordy which was imperfectly drained in 1740 & 1741. A small but prominent hill, the south and part of the north side are very precipitous. Mr. Dixon late Postmaster of Kirriemuir supposes this hill (from its name) to have been used as a British fort or Station. On its summit where the Trig. [Trigonometrical] Station is placed there are something like the appearance of a cairn of stones grown over with fog and grass, also round the base of the hill their are a great quantity of loose stones which appears to have been rolled down from its summit |

A large unshapely block of stone in an arable field on the farm of Mems. Mr. Osler of Mems says that the late Sir Charles Lyall of Kinnordy who was a geologist of some note had this stone examined and said that it belonged to Catlaw a hill 2 or 3 miles to the north and that it had been naturally brought here by a sledge of ice.
Although locally called a Standing Stone, it has no resemblance to those ancient monuments that are generally designated Standing Stones throughout the country, it is lying on the surface of the ground, and is very unshapely, probably about 10 or 12 tons in weight. |

"Tacitus obseres in his a/c [account] of the manner of the Germans, that it was their custom to dig Caves in the earth, where they laid up their grain & lived in Winter; and that in these caves they would find shelter from their enemies, of such caves there are several in Kirriemuir. The most remarkable is the "Weems Hole" on the top of the hill of Mearns, built with stone and covered above with large unpolished stones about 6ft. [feet] wide, the entry lies towards the south: and its course may be traced the length of 60 or 70 yards. The stones now covering the Cave are overgrown with earth, and the total length of it is not perceptible. This Cave has been opened and a great many human bones, with some querns & other curiosities were found in it."

Mems Hill [note]
Mr. McNicol farmer at Balnagarrow informs me that his brother, the late Dr. [Doctor] Nicol
made a search for this Cave, by digging up in several portions of the hill, but could not find it,
There are no object called Weems Hole & the hill is called Mems Hill not "Mearns Hill"
In making inquiry at at Mr. Wilkie Forester and Overseer at Kinnordy, he believes that the
writer of the Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] has made the mistake in placing it in the wrong parish, as there is an
object called "Weems Hole" on the summit of Mearns Hill situated a few miles
northeast of Brechin. |

Rocking Stones [note]
Rocking Stones - Until the year 1843 the County
of Angus possessed two excellent examples
in addition to that of Gilfumman (Lochlee)
These were in the Parish of Kirriemuir, on the
small estate of Hillhead - these time honored
monoliths are now no more having been blown
to pieces by gunpowder, and employed in building

"A burgh of barony, & a town of considerable antiquity and provincial importance, stands partly on level ground & partly on an inclined plain in the centre of the lower district of the parish to which it gives name. The town consists of several streets. Though containing numerous mean and and ungainly houses, it has an improved & thriving appearance, & gives indications of the presence both of taste & of successful industry, has many good shops, and is lighted at night with gas. Since the middle of last century, it has been the seat of an extensive manufacture of brown linen. No other trade than that of weaving is carried on. A Weekly Market, equal to any in Forfarshire, is held on Friday; & annual fairs for Cattle are held in June, July, Octr. [October] and Decr. [December] The town is a burgh of barony under Lord Douglas; but as a burgh, has neither property, revenue, nor debt. No taxes are levied, except some customs by the superior at fairs & markets The streets are kept in repair by the Statute labour conversion money of the county to which the inhabitants contribute. A baron bailie, appointed by the superior, is the only Magistrate. The burgh is under the charge of the County Police & all offences are prosecuted before the Sheriff. It is the seat of a small debt court"

An oblong building 4 storeys high and in tolerably good repair. There appears to have been a wing extending from the southeast of which a part of the wall is still to be seen jutting from the main building. D. Wilkie Esqr. believes it to have been built about 400 years ago by the Ancestors of the present Sir John Ogilvie M.P. [Member of Parliament]
"At Invercarity there is a Gothic building of cut stone in good repair, when it was erected is uncertain; but it must have been before the 15th. century. It consists of 4 stories. The walls are about 9 ft. [feet] thick, project considerably near the top, and terminate in a parapet not more than a foot thick. To the east of the gate which fronts the south are some vestiges of a wing, demolished, it is said by the Earl of Crawford in 1445, in some family feud between the Lindsays & Ogilvies, one of whom was then proprietor of Invercarity."

At the east end of it [Hill of Kirriemuir] in a stone fence is a large standing stone about 9 feet in height above the ground and at the base about 6½ feet in breadth. There was, till recently, a large stone lying beside this, which Mr. Dixson believes it to have been part of the Standing

Standing Continued |

|
[continued from page 53]
"Standing Stones, of these the most early of all Monuments. There are several in Kirriemuir, none of which have inscriptions of any kind. The most remarkable in the parish is the Standing Stone, on the hill of Kirriemuir, which has been evidently at some period split into two; one part of it is standing, the other is lying. The standing part is 9 feet in height, above the surface of the ground, at the base of it is 6 feet 6 inches in breadth and at the top it is 4 feet 6 inches: it cannot be less than 3 or 4 feet in the ground; and in the memory of man it tapered towards the top, but the projecting part, has been Knocked off. The lying part of the stone is 12 feet 9 inches in length. Tradition is silent as to the purpose for which it was erected."

A small square roofless tower being the only remains of what has been a very extensive building of the Lindsays of Forfar. The oven is still preserved also in a ruiness state, and the well shewn on trace, is where Mr. Bell says the Kitchen door stood. Mr. Jarvis in speaking of the Lindsays in his History of Forfar has the following.
"Such were the brave brothers of Ballinscho, like the Castles of their more powerful ancestors in other parts of the country, theirs too is a roofless ruin. A circular tower and other buildings stood at the northeast corner down to a late date; and the ruins of the more modern house, which was built by Fletcher (the reputed successor of of the Lindsays) stands near by. Many fine old trees surround the Lindsay Castle; and the orchard which occupies 1½ acre on the south side, is still enclosed and unploughed, and contains among many other fruit trees one of the largest Walnuts, that is perhaps to be found in the Kingdom." |

Balinscho was anciently an independent Ecclesiastical district.
The Church or Chapel was dedicated to St. Ninian, and stood
on the west of the Turnpike Road, and is still marked by the
family burial enclosure of Kinloch of Kilry.
This, too, had perhaps been the last resting place
of the Lindsays of Balinscho.
