032 | A small square roofless tower being the only remains of what has been a very extensive building of the Lindsays of Forfar. The oven is still preserved also in a ruiness state, and the well shewn on trace, is where Mr. Bell says the Kitchen door stood. Mr. Jarvis in speaking of the Lindsays in his History of Forfar has the following. "Such were the brave brothers of Ballinscho, like the Castles of their more powerful ancestors in other parts of the country, theirs too is a roofless ruin. A circular tower and other buildings stood at the northeast corner down to a late date; and the ruins of the more modern house, which was built by Fletcher (the reputed successor of of the Lindsays) stands near by. Many fine old trees surround the Lindsay Castle; and the orchard which occupies 1½ acre on the south side, is still enclosed and unploughed, and contains among many other fruit trees one of the largest Walnuts, that is perhaps to be found in the Kingdom." |
