A small Parish in Forfarshire bounded on the North by Farnell, on the South by Inverkeillor, on the East by Craig & Lunan, and on the West by Guthrie &c. The Parish is traversed by the Scottish North Eastern Railway which has one Station at the Glesterlaw, chiefly a Goods Station. The Brechin & Arbroath T.P. [Turn Pike] Road passes from North to south on the west side of the Parish, and the Road to Montrose from Forfar passes from the north west of Kinnell to the most northerly point by Whanland. Parts of the great Moors Montreathmont and Rossie Moor are in this Ph. [Parish]. The former is planted with trees and is a most extensive wood at the present time; the latter is

in some parts being reclaimed. Lunan Water is the only River in this Parish. The Gighty Burn flowing into it is the next in point of size after which the Pow. flowing to the South Esk, in Farnell, is the next stream of importance. The only actual remains of antiquity is Braikie Castle which is now ruinous. The Sites of Bolshan Castle & the Castle of Whitehills have been identified. Urns, it is stated in the Accounts of Kinnell, have been got in the Glasterlaw and upon the Middy Law (See N. [Name] Sheets of these). There are the Corn Mills of Hatton & Kinnells on the Lunan as well as a Spinning Mill, and on the Gighty there is another Spinning Mill. The Farms & Farm Steadings of Kinnell are large and Bolshan Farm may be mentioned as the most extensive. The Parish Church, which is the only religious house in the Parish, & the School are near the South western Boundary. There is a patronage school in the Muirside of Kinnell, which name applies to a number of small holdings extending more than a mile and a half north & south & between ½ a mile & a mile east & west on the west of Kinnell. |

"In the Battle Drum Wood there are many cairns or circular heaps of moor stones. They lie chiefly in two lines which are parallel to the Drum or ridge of the hill on the north and to the Battle Drum on the south, and they might be enclosed within two acres of ground, A little farther east, but not in this Parish, there are also the Battle Cairn & the Battle Well, additional memorials of an event which has now no other record than those Names and appearances. Tradition calls it a battle between the Picts and the Romans - perhaps because the common name of the Moor is Monroman although most probably that name is a corruption of Monthrewmont & consequently of much later date than the Cairns. The Battle Burn is said to have flowed with blood as far as Fithie
New Statl. [Statistical] Account
The Battle Cairns as pointed out on the ground by Andrew Wallace, Crossgates, are covered with turf but they are remarkable objects even as they are at present on the ground. There are four Cairns near the Well & the rest are upon the Battle Drum, a ridge which runs parallel with the Battle Burn & which has an avenue

through the Fir Wood of Montreathmonth Muir along its top. The first avenue to the west of the Battle Well running north & south is sometimes called "Battle Ride" but the Avenue along the top of the Battle Drum is also called by the same name. The Avenue to the west of the Well has not therefore been named on the Examination Traces. It would have been desirable to name it if the name had been properly established as it is, like the "Ardovie Road", a Public Right of Way through the Muir of Montreathmonth.
Besides the four Cairns already described there is the Cairn at the first Avenue which crosses the Drum to the east of the Well. The third Avenue to the east of the Well (crossing the Battle Drum from north to south, although the Battle Drum does not extend so far east) has a couple of cairns in the same avenue or line about 3 chains length from the intersection of the Avenues. (Trace 2) These two cairns are not very high or remarkable. The largest cairn is in the wood near the Battle Well. All that is known of the Battle Well, or indeed of the Cairns, is traditional, and they (particularly the cairns) have been adopted in antiquity character from the Extract quoted. The Well is from its probable age adopted in the character of an antiquity too. It is widely known for the purity of the water, and in the dryest seasons is always full. The "Battle Drum" is a name like the Battle Well, Cairns or Burn - well known. Everything near the well is named after it. The [coss] through the wood near and east of the well is called Battle Dykes also. The Battle Drum extends some 6 chains on each side of the end of the name as it appears on the Trace. It falls on one side the south to the Battle Burn, and on the north to the Drain which divides Maryton from Farnell. |

A Burn which rises on the Estate of Turin in Aberlemno Ph. [Parish], and is in the first part of its course called "Battle Burn", and afterwards "Pow Burn". It bears the former name from the point where it rises to "Woodside" in Montroman Muir, changing to "Pow Burn" from the point where it is joined by "Rough Moss Burn" and is derived from a battle which tradition, as stated in the New Statl. [Statistical] Account, says was fought at a place called the Battle Drum & the Battle Well some distance to the west of the place the Battle Burn crosses the Arbroath & Brechin Road. The Name "The Pow" is erroneously applied to this stream where it is understood to the personal authorities as the Battle Burn, on the Estate Map. It is the principal source of the Pow - which see, properly "Pow Burn" (Trace 5.34-10) |

This Name applies to numerous small holdings let originally with a free Lease to reclaim the "Muirside of Kinnell" which is now cultivated by this means. It extends north to Montroman Muir Plans 34.13 &14; South to Plans 40-1 & 2; & west to the Brechin & Arbroath Road. The eastern boundary originally extended nearly as far as the Farm Steading of Beauchamp but this side is now curtailed to the Parish Road from "Summerhill" (40-2.4) by Pitmikie & the School. The present march or boundary line of the Muirside of Kinnell is coloured in yellow on the Examination Traces. The Right Honble. [Honourable] the Earl of South Esk is proprietor. |

"The Castle of Bolshan which as Monipenny's Scottish Chronicle tells us in 1612, was Lord Ogilvy's special residence has passed away with the other monumnets of feudal grandeur. The Cemetery and site of the Chapel were subjected to the plough before 1767. The last remains of the Castle were removed soon after, and now, for a long while, there has been no other remembrances of the ancient glory of the place, than the peculiar appearance of the soil a little to the west of the present farm house" Beachamp or Balshan.
New Statistical Account
The site of this Castle is adopted upon the two first authorities quoted. Some appearance in the soil is now faintly perceptible at times in the course of cultivation as stated by Mr Goodlet Farmer of Beauchamp. |

This Farm & farm steading is the largest in the Parish of Kinnell. It is the property of the Earl of South Esk. The name was formerly Bolshan or Balshan changed to Beauchamp as far back, it would appear from the County Map, as 1794. "Beauchamp" is well known and always used by the Proprietors Agents &c. but is still called Bolshan. |

Lord Southesk considers "Bolshan"
to be the proper mode of spelling
the word which is absurdly written
"Beauchamp".
With regard to the Moor, he is in=
=clined to suggest that both forms
of the word might be entered on the
Map:
either
"Montreathmont or Monroman Moor"
or
"Monroman Moor"
(anciently Montreathmont Moor)
or"Montreathmont Moor"
(commonly called Monroman Moor)
If only one form of the word can be
adopted, he considers
"Montreathmont"
to be the best, the other being evidently
a contraction.
Lord Southesk has been from home,
otherwise the above notice would have
been obtained and sent sooner to Cor=
=poral Harrison.

"On the top of the Wuddy Law, the highest point in the Parish, there was a large tumulus or barrow, the diameter of which was about 45 yards & the height 4. It was composed of alternate layers of stones and earth, & when removing the stones for the filling of drains, earthen vessels containing black mould were discovered. And not far off are the Gallow law and Pit where, if we may believe tradition, capital punishments were inflicted in ancient times."
New Statistical Account
No remains of the Tumulus exist now on the top of the "Wuddy Law". As stated by Mr Mathewson of Easter Brakie, the Tumulus was cleared away about 50 years ago. Of the vessels or urns found in taking it away there has been no information obtained except what is above quoted from the N. Statl. [New Statistical] Account which is corroborated by the Revd [Reverend] Mr. Walker whose information is given below. The names Gallow Law & Pit are not known but they are synonymous with Wuddy the Scottish word for the Gibbet. The Revd [Reverend] Mr Walker who wrote the N. Statl. [New Statistical] Account of Kinnell, having seen one or two of the vessels or urns which were dug out of the Wuddy Law, and the Tumulus being described to him (as he states) by the Tenant of the ground who dug them out, "Site of Tumulus" is adopted on the Examination Traces. There is no doubt, as Mr Walker says, that this Tumulus was as described to him by the Tenant who levelled it, & in whose house the urns were seen. The description is partly corroborated by the quantities of stones to be seen on the Wuddy Law at the present time. The small stones are more numerous than at other places |

A good Farm Steading the property of the Earl of South Esk. Properly this is a Paddock Pool as it appears in the 'Roll, and acknowledged by Mr Lyall, but it is not desired to adopt "Paddock", which is seldom used except in particular writings. There is on this Estate the farm called "Hill" particularized as the "Hill of Beauchamp", which latter is adopted upon the authority of Mr Lyall who wishes it to be so adopted. It might however be understood on the Plans as it is in the shortened form of "Hill" in speaking of it in the locality (See Hill of Beauchamp Trace 4. 34-15) |

The Site of this Castle as described by Messrs. A Farm Steading and a Spinning Mill separated by the distance of about 10 chains from each other. The Lessee of the Mill occupies the Farm Steading to which is attached a small farm. Some 60 hands, mostly women, are employed in the Mill in spinning flax into yarn - generally course or string yarn, ready for weaving. Usually this goes under the name of Hatton Mill, as it was, till recently, all included & held by the one Tenant in the western farm Ho [House] of Hatton Mill. The Proprietor's Agent is desirous of the distinction of Hatton "Spinning Mill" to it, & the steading held by the same person, which saves the repetition of a name properly applying to both of the present steadings on the lands of Hatton Mill. |

An oat farm occupied by servants, belonging to the farm of Bandoch in Inverkeillor Ph. [Parish]. This as well as Bandoch is the Earl of Dalhousie's property. There is a large Dam on the Gighty for a victual mill in Newbigging.
By a "Victual Mill" (which is the common term used) it must be understood to be a Threshing Mill, the only difference being that it is driven by water instead of by horse power. These Mills are not shewn upon the Plans. A Dam for driving the Threshing, or Victual Mill, as it is called, may be seen at almost every Farm house except where the machinery is for horse power within those circular buildings attached to steadings. |
