"The origin of this name seems to be uncertain. It is said to have derived its name from three Gaelic words, signifying the head or junction of the burn of the Drums. It is bounded on the North and East by the parishes of Cortachy & Clova & Kirriemuir; by the parish of Airlie on the South; and by Lintrathen on the West. The surface of the ground everywhere presents an undulating appearance, considerable tracts of level land intervene between ridges of low hills, which are themselves frequently indented. The parish is situated in the braes of Angus and is everywhere abundantly supplied with Water. The principal streams are the Prosen, Melgam and the Carity" - "The New Stat [Statistical] Account."
The parish contains several Antiquities several Tumuli, places where Stone Cists &c were discovered. the ruins of Balfour Castle &c

This prefix is neither from Car signifying

but from Cor short from Corrie - see the
Glen or Corrie called "Corogle" - for
uniformity sake it will be better (as the names
are written entirely from pronunciation) to adopt
the same prefix in each case - viz. Cor.

A small plain built edifice, being the Parish Church. It was erected in 1840 on the site of its predecessor, on the walls of which "various stones on which singular devices had been cut were discovered imbedded in the building. Two stones on which crosses are finely carved with accompanying hieroglyphics may be particularly mentioned, These stones it is probable has their origin about the time of the introduction of Christianity into our country, and would seem to be a connecting link between Pagan mythology and Christian worship, several rude relics which may have been esteemed precious in the time of Romish supremacy, were likewise found"

DIKE |

This object resembles to all appearance an old Turf or Fail dyke. Mr. Haldanes supposes it to be the remains of a Pictish encampment, and says he "took over a drawing of it to the Antiquarian Society in Edinbro [Edinburgh], where it was also beleived to be such."
This dike presents no appearance of a cyclopean or massive character being but a foot or two above the ground and of trivial breadth - there are certainly one or two large stones in it and that is all that can be said - the meandering form is quite baffling and on the whole it is a very doubtful affair. Note - I have corresponded with Mr. Haldane on these objects.
He states "the old dike presents a very singular appearance.
"I gave a description of this dike with the round barrow which it partially
encloses at a meeting of the Antiquarian Society in Edinburgh where the opinion
generally entertained was that it was a Pictish Encampment"
My father, who was long Minister of Kingoldrum, often told me that the
tradition was that the great mass of stone in the adjoining field was the base
of a Rocking Stone - confirmed by the finding in the moss below a few years ago
of a stone suitable for the top stone in the exact direction in which it would
have rolled"

"The Castle of Balfour built by Cardinal Beaton is the only building of Antiquity. It has long been dismantled and a ruin, but originally have been a place of considerable strength. The structure is in the Gothic style. The family of Balfour, has long ago sunk into that of Fotheringham of Powrie, Mr. Farquharson of Baldovie the present proprietor lately caused 2 wings of the Castle to be taken down to afford materials for the erection of a farm house. The beauty of the old ruin has been in consequence in great measure destroyed". New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account]
"Balfour Castle, now in ruins, is said to have been built by Cardinal Beaton. This, however, appears to be a popular error: Balfour, which was held by the Abbotts of Arbroath, was possessed by Ogilvys from at least 1478, & the castle may have been the work of Beaton's contemporary, Walter Ogilvy, third son of Lord Airly, & brother of Marion Ogilvy, mother of Cardinal Beaton's children."

My attention was drawn to this object by Mr. Reid of Meikle Kenny on whose farm of Kinnaneil it stands, and who on digging into it found burnt wood, unctuous earth and deer's horns - It is an artificial Tumulus of earth.

There is only one entry on the page for Tumulus and the wording implies that is at Kinnaneil not Meickle Kenny. |
