[Situation] In the SW [South West] end of Forfarshire.
A parish in the South-west extremity of Forfarshire, bounded on the north-east by Newtyle, on the east by Lundie on a small part of the west by the Forfarshire portion of Coupar Angus and on the other sides by Perthshire. It has nearly the figure of a hexagon its south-east considerably indented, two sides ragged or irregular and each of the six measuring on an average about 2[ ] miles. But a detached portion one mile long and ¾ mile broad, lies 6 miles south-west from the nearest point of the main body, surrounded by Collace Kinnaird Kilspindie and St. Martin in Perthshire. The east side of the main body being bounded by the water-shedding line of the Sidlaw hills, the surface first descends the slope of these hills and then glides gently down into the plain of Strathmore. The greater or western part is nearly level and well cultivated

and thoroughly enclosed. The lesser or upland part is partly heathy partly covered with plantation but chiefly disposed in pasturage. The soil throughout the lowlands is in general fertile but in the uplands it is thin and light. Two streams one of 6 miles length of course which comes in from Perthshire and flows partly on the bounds and partly in the interior and one of 4 miles length of course which issues from a lochlet in the south-east extremity of the parish and cuts it north-westward into two nearly equal parts - unite a few hundred yards [at] Coupar Angus or the point of their passing into Perthshire and in their progress drive a considerable number of mills. This parish is in the presbytery of Meigle and synod of Angus and Mearns. There is no detached portion of Kettins except the portion already mentioned, nor are any detached portion or portions of any other parish within Kettins |

Kettins 6 March 1860
Dear Sir
I write to say, that
a large stone about 11½ feet
long & 4 broad has been
used as a bridge over the
burn at the Manse time
immemorial, verly likely
for more than 200 years
as appears from the worn appearance
of its surface in the middle
by traffic, But it had
been a Monument of
some event in far gone
days. On its under side
are several compart-
ments, filled with
carvings of different
kinds - Men, animals,
and other figures.
It was taken up some
two months ago by
Order of Lord Hallyburton
and the Antiquarian
Society, I think, & is now
set up in the churchyard
on a pedestal 4 feet high.
Now I am not certain

At Baldowrie there is an erect Danish monument Six feet
high. It contains Some figures but they are almost entirely defaced,
New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Forfarshire p. [page] 643
Forfarshire is remarkable for its great number of ancient Sculptured Stones which are
found in different localities. The age in which they were erected, and by what people, and for
what purpose have been long the subject of desquisition among antiquaries, but from my de-
ciphering of the Inscription of one of the principal stones of this class which is in the church
yard of St. Vigians, (See Name Book for ph. [parish] of St. Vigians), it appears pretty plainly that they belong
to the age of the establishment of Christianity in this district, or at least not long afterwards, and
that they were erected by a christian people as sepulchral monuments to commemorate their
illustrious dead. J.C.
* There appears to be no good authority for stating that a cairn Stood here as mentioned in the above

A Cave or Weem about 50 feet in length was discovered
about three years ago on the highest part of a field east
of Lintrose. The breadth at the inner end was about
seven or eight feet and the height five feet: it gradually
narrowed to three feet at the entrance which winded half
round. The floor was paved, and the walls built with large
Stones, the upper Courses projecting inwards. These
Caves were used by the ancient inhabitants of the country
either as hiding holes as Chalmers thinks or as others suppose
as winter quarters. New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Forfarshire p. [page] 643-4 |

The Castle of Dores stood on the Summit of the
hill South from Pitcur. Tradition reports it to have
been Some time the residence of Macbeth.
On this hill great quantities of Ashes are said
to have discovered. From this circumstance it is
concluded to have been one of those hills where fires
used to be Kindled in ancient times to alarm the country
on the approach of an enemy. On the east quarter of this
hill and closely by the side of the new road the workmen quarrying
Stones Came upon an excavation in the Solid rock in which they found some half Consumed
bones of a Soft consistence. The hole was about 3 feet wide either way and seemed to direct its course
towards the south. There was no entrance from above observed for at least half a mile in any direction
from this place. Old Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] vol. [volume] 17. p. [page] 18 |
