The south portion of this camp only is in this parish and can be distinctly traced excepting on the east where it has been ploughed up. About 8 or 9 years ago Mr Warden of Riskingie dug up 4 or 5 stone coffins (see trace 5) containing bones, and an urn in each, one of the urns was ornamented, the others were plain, one coffin appeared to be that of a youth it being smaller than the rest, the urn in it was also smaller |

[Situation] In the west end of Guthrie (Detached)
There are no traces of this chapel on the ground although the graveyard is quite entire being in all round, there is what appears to be a family vault in the centre also several tombstones.
This being the church of a rectory the designation Chapel is not strictly correct And as it was the Church of Kirkbuddo the proper name should be retained as it will best explain the object. Site of Kirkbuddo Church is therefore written on plans - See extract annexed |

Chapel at Kirkbuddo
New Stat: [Statistical ]Account page 469
"It appears from the records of the Abbey of Arbroath
that the Kirk of Guthrie had been a chapel belonging
to the abbey. It was purchased from the Abbey by
Sir William Guthrie, the ancestor of the present
patron of the parish, who founded and endowed
a collegiate church at Guthrie, for a provost
and three prebends. This deed of foundation was
confirmed by a bull from Pope Sertus IV
of date 14th June 1479. To this foundation
at Guthrie, Kirkbuddo or Carbuddo was
attached as a rectory. The rectory has been
incorporated with Guthrie as an integral
part of the same parish, since the reformation."
Land of the Lindsays page 298 :
"Like the Church at Guthrie, that at Carbuddo
or the Southern division of the parish, was
in the diocese of Brechin, and a rectory
belonging to the church at Guthrie; but
the time of its suppression is unknown, and
the graveyard only remains"
The graveyard and site of the old
chapel are identified and marked on trace. J. Keely 2nd Cor: RE [2nd Corporal Royal Engineers] |
