"The name of this parish in the deeds relative to the patronage, is Forfar Restennet. In the "Estate & order of the Presbyteries" in May 1586, as recorded in the Booke of the Universal Kirk, Forfar & Restennet are inserted as separate parishes & it seems, therefore, to have been intended to constitute them two distinct parishes, - an intention which was not followed out; or Forfar Restennet may be a united parish, though no evidence as to the period & circumstances of the annexation has been discovered. No satisfactory account can be given of the etymology of the name Forfar. The parish includes the royal burgh of Forfar, is situated on the south side of the valley of Strathmore, & is bounded by the parish of Rescobie on the east & north: Dunnichen and Inverarity on the South: Kinnettles on the South & West: Glamis on the West: & Kirriemuir on the West & North. The Scottish North Eastern Railway passes through the parish." New Stat A/c. [Statistical Account] |

side where it is nearly defaced by the plough. The Authorities quoted believe it to be of Roman origin, and the expression used when speaking of it is, Roman Camp. Dr. [Doctor] Edwards of Forfar, is in possession of some Urns that were found in it some years ago.
"This Camp is about 1½ east of Forfar, and is of very considerable extent. By some it is alleged that this is the remains not of a Roman Camp but of Pictish Camp. A fosse evidently extends from the Loch of Forfar to that of Restennet (cannot now be pointed out), and it is stated in a paper published by the late Dr. [Doctor] Jamieson, Author of the Scot. Dict. [Scottish Dictionary] and who at one time was a Seceder minister in Forfar in reference to this camp that the ditch and the ramparts had been cast by the Picts under Feredith, for guarding their Camp against the attack from the Scots under Alpin, before the battle of Restennet. Occasionally coins, urns and pieces of armour have been found in the ruins where the camp just mentioned is situated, but none of them has ever come under the notice of the writer of this Article." New Stat Acct. Statistical Account] 11, 1845, 694
This Camp presents none of the appearances of a Roman Camp. It is very entire, and is of the class known as British.

This appears to have been a very extensive building, the walls of the east wing still remain at their original height including the tower and in a state of good preservation, that large square forming the south wing appear much dilapidated but has been recently plaistered up with mortar, by G. Dempster Esqr. of Dunnechan who is proprietor, and who uses the east wing as the family Burial ground.
"At Restennet there are the ruins of a priory it stood on the west end of the Lake. It must appearantly originally wholly been surrounded by water, and must have been approached by a bridge. It was connected with the Abbey of Jedburgh, and as the charters of that Abbey were deposited for safety at Restennet, the conjecture has been hazarded that the phrase res tennet is the origin of the name"

[Notes]
The Ruins of the Priory of Rostinoth are still of considerable extent.
It appears that from the earliest date down to about the close of the 15th. Century the spelling
of the name was Rostinoth (? the island of a flat or level promentory). After the latter
period it assumed the form of Restennet or Restennett.
