[Situation] At the north end of Temple Lane
This is the site of a port or gate which was the entrance on the NW [North West] side of the town after it was fortified by a wall & deep ditch in 1547. The Street here is now in progress of draining and the foundation of the wall has been dug up. and the ditch which was on the outside is easily traced but independent of this evidence tradition points out the spot as the site of the port. The street at this place is named after this port or gate, West Port, as it would appear that the port was anciently called Argyle's Port and in after times West Port.
"Dundee was formerly fortified with walls begun by the English and completed in 1547 by the French. The existence and even the position of its gates are Commemorated in the names of its streets, Nethergate, Overgate Seagate, and Murraygate, The first formerly called Fluckergate and the second Argylegate."

The Street was anciently known as "Fleukergaitt" & appears to have been crossed near the junction of South Tay Street by the old town wall, the porte or gate in which at this point being most Southward & looking at the physical features of the ground in the locality, the lowermost; doubtless originated the present name of Nethergate. A small building is pointed out as being the remains of the Town's Hospital. This building consists of the central part of a cabinet makers premises consisting of ware rooms and work shops, Occupied by Mr. D. Anderson. This part of the building of the hospital does not appear to be very ancient and is of plain architecture 3 storeys high. - Before the Reformation the hospital was an Institution belonging to the brethren of the Holy Trinity or Red Friars, the building of which appears to have been preserved notwithstanding the demolition of religious houses &c. at the eve of the Reformation and was long after used as an hospital for the use of the town. From entries in the accounts of the hospital lately printed for evidence in case of a lawsuit between the presbytery, and the magistrates of Dundee and made out by Mr. Cosmo Innes it appears the hospital was burned in 1645 and was soon afterwards rebuilt. It also appears to have undergone many alterations from time to time. It was fitted up in 1754 as a workhouse and in 1757 was made a prison for French prisoners. From

the Rent Roll of the property of the hospital made out in 1581 the revenue of the hospital appears to be considerable. - Whether the house or building used as an hospital after the Reformation was a separate building from that of the Convent of Red Friars or whether the hospital and Convent consisted of the same building cannot now be determined but it is generally believed that the monastery or convent was either adjoining the hospital partly on the site now occupied by the catholic chapel or was part of the building of the hospital itself.

"A Convent of Mathurine, Robertine, Red, or Trinity Friars founded in the year 1392 by Sir James Lindsay, Knt. [Knight] a cadet of the ancestral house of the noble family of Crawford stood upon or near to the site of the town's Hospital at the foot of South Tay Street where the Catholic Chapel stands if indeed the hospital was not in reality the monastery itself. From some old papers which were obligingly communicated to us many years ago we are inclined to consider this establishment as having been at its erection a dependent of the ministry of the holy Trinity and Captivity at Berwick-upon-Tweed, the minister or superior of which was General of the whole order within Scotland, — at least the minister at Berwick in 1296 was General for in that year he swore fealty as General of the order to Edward I. of England as Lord Paramont of Scotland for the possessions of his own Convent in particular and generally for those of the whole brethren in the Kingdom. It is probable that like as in other Orders, the office and dignity of General was not unalterably annexed to one convent however this is certain that whatsoever individual held the office of General all the houses of the order wheresoever they were situated within his province were dependent on and subject to his authority during the time of his Generalship.
The first donation to this house was a tenement within the town which was granted by the founder in the foundation Charter but the position is not specified. Robert III. who is the only other benefactor whose name has escaped the ravages of time by his charter under the great seal dated ___ confirming the foundation, dissolved the parish church of Kettins from the Mathurine Convent at Berwick-upon-Tweed and annexed it to this house." + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
"Of the money revenues of the convent nothing is known unless the various annuals in the town's ancient Rent Roll marked as payable to the hospital be considered as having previous to the Reformation belonged to the Friars. These annuals amount to £91.8.5 and shew in connection with other sources of revenue that whatever was the number of the brethren, their total income was considerable but perhaps not more than what would be necessary for the purposes of the institution of the order, for at least one fourth part of the revenues of every house of the order over all

the church was laid aside for the laudable purpose of redeeming Christians from Mahometan Slavery and this independent of donations and collections which were wholly applied to the same noble and generous purpose.
Of the landed property that belonged to the ministry only a part of it is known to us and that part consists chiefly of some of the fields called Wards or meadows which indeed is the name of a large extent of ground at the north side of the ancient royalty." &c., &c. Thomson's Hist. [History] of Dundee pp. [pages] 324-5
"There was in Dundee a Convent of Brethren of the Holy Trinity (Called also de Redemptione Captivorum and "Red Friars") who are chiefly known in connection with their Hospital, Sir James de Lindsay who died in 1397 granted to the brethren of the Holy Trinity his tenement in Dundee to be a Hospital and maison Dieu for them and for the support of the said brethren and the sick and infirm therein dwelling by his appointment; And King Robert III. in confirming that grant endowed the said Hospital and maison Dieu with the church of Kettens and its whole fruits and revenues so long as they could not be enjoyed under an old grant to the Hospital of Berwick then in English hands. Other property in land and ground annuals had been acquired by the Hospital before the Queen's grant. There is no evidence of any specific legal transference of the Hospital or its property from the Brethren of the Holy Trinity to the magistrates of Dundee previous to the date of Queen Mary's Charter," &c, &c. + + + Report by Mr. C. Innes In causa Presby. [Presbytery] of Dundee against the magistrates of Dundee pp. [pages] 4 & 5
At the part of the Nethergate opposite the foot of Tay Street Stand the dilapidated remains of the hospital The date of its foundation is unknown. On the 15th. of April 1567 Queen Mary granted to the magistrates Council and Commons of Dundee for behoof of the ministry and hospital all lands, &c, which had belonged to any Chaplainries altars or Prebendaries within the liberty of the town with the land which belonged to the Dominican and Franciscan Friars and the Grey Sisters which which were incorporated into one estate to be Called the foundation of the ministry and hospital of Dundee. This charter was confirmed by James VI. in 1601. The property of the hospital though under charge nominally of an hospital master is in fact under the administration of the magistrates of Dundee. The house has been allowed to fall down and the funds belonging to it are now applied to the aid of poor burgesses. Fullarton's Gazetteer |

This port or gate, the site of which was pointed out by Mr. Reid and by Mr. J. Note. Tradition also speaks of an Inner Port and wall a short distance E. [East] of the above It is said the port stood at the south end of Long Wynd and that the Wynd is built partly on the site of the wall. But I have not seen any reference or mention of it in any authentic document.
