Writer Johnfield, Dundee Revd. [Reverend] S. Keenan - Nethergate Dundee Colin Symers Esqr. Nethergate, Dundee 054 [Situation] Near the west end of Magdalene Green or Yard. This spot is pointed out as the site of a religious house which stood here before the Reformation. The place at present consists of Slightly elevated ground partly rocky undersoil, but no trace or vestige of any building is to be seen, yet all the old inhabitants of the town who pay attention to the traditions of the locality generally point it out as the site of a small Convent or some religious ho. [house] from which the green or park took its name. Mr. Charles Roger an educated man and one who paid much attention to the study of antiquities and now upwards of 70 years of age states that about 30 years ago he saw some remains or foundation of a buildng removed which was then generally believed to be that of a religious house. Mr. James Thomson author of a history of Dundee has been consulted and he confirms the above statement and further states that he learned that it was a small Cell or Convent the inmates of which consisted of five sisters but from what source he learned this he did not state The following gentlemen [continued on page 62]

OS1/14/33/62 Supposed Site of St. Mary Magdalene's Convent or Chapel (Continued) [continued from page 61] gentlemen were also consulted William Reid Esq. Writer, Revd. [Reverend] Stephen Keenan, & Colin Symers Esqr. whose statements were nearly similar to the foregoing. But in consulting the historical accounts of Dundee and in referring to the public records, &c, of the town there appears no authentic record of this house or establishment, and in the historical accounts the truth of the existence of such an establishment appears based on the supposition that such must have existed from the name Magdalene Green. But in a report lately made by Mr. C Innes advocate in a case of Lawsuit between the presbytery of Dundee and that of the magistrates he states that "A Chapel of St Mary Magdalen stood on the west of the town", And as this gentleman appears to have made great research concerning the religious establishments of Dundee and as he has not mentioned a Convent of St Mary Magdalene it is safe to conclude that there is no record of such now extant on what authority he has made mention of a Chapel of St Mary Magdalene does not appear [continued on page 63]
OS1/14/33/62 [Page] 62
OS1/14/33/63 Supposed Site of St. Mary Magdelene's Convent or Chapel (Continued) [continued from page 62] A cloister of Magdalenes stood near the river at the south west side of the town where a large irregular field in the vicinity of its site which cannot now be accurately pointed out has from them the name of Magdalene Yard or Green and this affords some [ground] to suppose that it had belonged in property to the nuns. Many years ago when the foundations were excavating for the house erected by the late Bailie Andrew Peddie on the north verge of the Green and at the foot of the lane called the Step Row the labourers dug up several fragments of statues among which there was a finely executed [head] almost the size of life. This head was long in our possession and from the fact of these relics being found at that place we are tempted to conclude that the site of the nunnery was where Mr. Peddies house stands.* The use and superiority of the Magdalene Green is vested in the town Council for the common use and in the University of St. Andrews which is said to derive an annual of £5 — whether Scots or English is not stated but most probably the more for the grazing it affords. A row of march stones but now greatly [curtailed in] number from what we have known there runs along the side of the road that bounds the northern side of the Green on which the armorial Saltier of St Andrews and the date 1619 were rudely scratched. There is one which bears the lilies of Dundee and the date 1749 in a tolerable style of sculpture as also another with the same bearing and the former date but very little better than those of St. Andrews. Nothing more is known concerning this establishment." Thomson's Hist. [History] of Dundee p. [page] 329
OS1/14/33/63 [Page] 63 * Note. Particular research and enquiry have been made concerning the fragments of statues &c, said to have been found but no one in the locality nor in the town could be found that even remembers to have seen any of these except Mr. Thomson, And Mr. Charles Rogers who remembers the time when Bailie Peddies house was built says that the above statement is not worthy of credit.
