This building appears to have been long removed but tradition still points to the place where it stood but does not distinctly point the exact site. Mr. Reid who has given considerable attention to the antiquities of Dundee points out the site as marked on trace. The same is coroborated by Mr. James Thomson the historian who was consulted personally This building appears to have served the purposes of a Jail or prison and also that of a Town House where the Town Council met for the despatch of business and also where the burgh Courts were held. It was, according to the opinion of the authorities quoted, that in this Jail the last wretch that suffered for the crime of witch-craft Grissel Jaffry was incarcerated

The Seagate
In ancient times it also included the market cross and "Tollbwith" or Town House. Both stood nearly opposite the foot of Peter Street which was completed and opened for passage only in 1775. The site of the Cross since removed to the High in 1586 is identified by a peculiar arrangement of the stones on the Causeway in the form of an octagon and the Town House from a stone which was dug out of the foundation when the site was preparing for the erection of the buildings opposite the foot of Peter Street, seems to have been built about the middle of the 13th. Century - perhaps the year 1260. The cross is only remarkable for being the place where the young Cannible was burnt alive as stated in a former section of this work. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
Besides all this the Seagate is understood to have been the scene of the incremation of Grisell Jaffry an unfortunate who had fallen under the fama of witchcraft. It is understood that the whole particulars of the trial and execution of this poor victim of persection are preserved among the archives of the town. -

[Situation] In the Seagate at the NW [ North West] side of Old Tolbooth (site of)
The site of this object is distinctly marked in the pavement of the Street by a peculiar arrangement of the paving stones. Its arrangement is a Circle with two diameters, as a cross, but it said that originally the form was that of octagon. In ancient times this place appears to have been the central part of the town but when it became more extended it was considered expedient to have the market removed to the High Street and the Cross was then removed also to the latter place this event appears from the accounts to have taken place in 1586. Tradition points out the Cross in the Seagate to have been the place Grissell Jaffry was burned. Mr. Reid states that in his boyhood days that there was a hollow in the Street beside the site of the Cross

The two transcriptions of council minutes from 1669/70 are fascinating sources but the combination of 17th century abbreviations with nineteenth century handwriting makes transcription tricky. There are also some archaisms such as delated (=denounced). Suggested expansions of abbreviations are given in brackets but should not be taken as gospel. Alternative suggestions welcome. |

Church of St. Paul [see page 31]
The first church known in Dundee is believed to be that of St Paul which was situated
betwixt the Murraygate and the Seagate nearly opposite the Dog Well and where a small Court
opening from the former street bears the name of the Apostle. At what time it was erected in
what manner it was endowed and by whom are all alike unknown. The place where it stood
and also its burying-ground, have been for many ages occupied with other buildings in
the walls of the oldest of some of which are to be seen niches fragments of sculptured stones
and pieces of moulding relics no doubt of the desecrated church. This district of the town
is the cure of the vicar or senior minister of the South church and hence it takes
the name of the parish or district of St. Paul.

[Situation] In St. Paul's Court
This is pointed out, by the authorities quoted, as the Site of St. Paul's Church. There remains none of the old Church as they were all removed to make way for the dwellinghouses Occupying it site. In the excavations for the present houses there were discovered Several Graves & other remains of a Burial ground; and the Well, said to be that used in Connexion with this Church still remains in the Cellar beneath Mr. Brown's Wine Store.
Mr. Charles Roger possessed property at one time adjoining the place and he states that reference is made in the Title Deeds to the site of St. Paul's Church as being adjoining his property on the west side, but he says that he never saw any vestige or traces of a burial ground here. |

[Situation] On the eastern side of Castle Street
The site of this Castle was a high rock which stood 80 or 90 feet above the general surface of the surrounding plain with its sides precipitous or nearly perpendicular all round and having a horizontal plain or area on top of sufficient extent for a large building. On this plain tradition states the castle had stood This rock has been cleared away during the progress of modern improvements but all vestiges of the Castle have been removed for ages past The place marked on trace has been pointed out by the persons quoted as authorities for the name. They had seen and remember the rock before it was quarried to make room for the buildings in Castle Street The summit or plain referred to above was situated at a Considerable elevation directly over the place marked on trace and consequently must have been the place where the castle stood. |

[Situation] On the southern side of Hight Street and southern side of Town House
The site of St. Clements Ch. [Church] which appears to have been once the parish church is well known. All the authorities quoted for the name agree in stating that the Town House is built on the site and that it being a parish it had a considerable grave yard attached Some remains of this grave yard have been discovered from time to time during the progress of improvements and it is believed by the authorities quoted to have extended to the southward of the church down as far as the south end of the lane called the vault and as far westward as the houses on the east side of Crichton Street, and on the east as far as St. Clements Lane and the houses adjoining it. |

4th. Nov. [November] 1857
Sheet 54-9 No. 10 Traces 1, &. 2,
In Thomson's History of Dundee
page 320 It is stated that the
"Chapel of St. Nicholas was
Situated on the large rock
at the Ferry Harbour which
from the Saint had the name
of St. Nicholas' Craig and
which was until a few years
ago the site of the public
Slaughter House." - and in
Fullarton's Gazetteer it is said
"On a rock at the western
part of the harbour originally
called Nicholas rock and
afterwards Chapel-craig stood
the chapel of St. Nicholas"
The name of this Chapel
and rock should have
been written on trace and
in Name Sheets. Even tho' [though]
the rock may have been
quarried away there is
little doubt but that the
spot where it stood can be still
identified. Will you have
the goodness to make research
concerning these objects &
write the proper names in
the usual form in the proper
position on trace and write
Descriptive Rks. [Remarks]

not the name be written

Upon the authority

it should be written
"Earl Grey Dock" &
thus correspond with

This site is described by Dr. [Doctor] Small in his Statistical acccount of Dundee in 1792, in Thomson's Hist: [History] of Dundee 1847 & also in Fullarton's Gazetteer & Mackays Hist: [History] of Dundee Robert Grey Esqr. of the Earl's Lodging Mr. Callanan, Shipbuilder both of Dundee, each certify to this site as having within their recollection been used for public Slaughter houses as asserted by Thomson in his History & they are both aware of its being traditionally reputed, the site of St. Nicholas Chapel. The South[ern] slope of the rock which is connected on every other side with the main land is still washed by the Tay & was known as St. Nicholas Craig |
