054 [Situation] On the eastern side of Castle Street
The site of this Castle was a high rock which stood 80 or 90 feet above the general surface of the surrounding plain with its sides precipitous or nearly perpendicular all round and having a horizontal plain or area on top of sufficient extent for a large building. On this plain tradition states the castle had stood This rock has been cleared away during the progress of modern improvements but all vestiges of the Castle have been removed for ages past The place marked on trace has been pointed out by the persons quoted as authorities for the name. They had seen and remember the rock before it was quarried to make room for the buildings in Castle Street The summit or plain referred to above was situated at a Considerable elevation directly over the place marked on trace and consequently must have been the place where the castle stood.
