054 | [Situation] In the Seagate at the NW [ North West] side of Old Tolbooth (site of) The site of this object is distinctly marked in the pavement of the Street by a peculiar arrangement of the paving stones. Its arrangement is a Circle with two diameters, as a cross, but it said that originally the form was that of octagon. In ancient times this place appears to have been the central part of the town but when it became more extended it was considered expedient to have the market removed to the High Street and the Cross was then removed also to the latter place this event appears from the accounts to have taken place in 1586. Tradition points out the Cross in the Seagate to have been the place Grissell Jaffry was burned.
