054 | [Situation] On both sides of the western end of Scouringburn. This establishment consists of two extensive departments and having several ranges of buildings. from 1 to 4 storeys high, situate at the extreme end of Scouringburn, those ranges on the north side, in which is carried on the spinning of Flax, Jute, and Tow, having every accommodation for that purpose in the shape of Large Preparing Rooms, Heckling Rooms, Batching Sheds, Spinning Rooms, and also extensive Apartments for mechanics The machinery in the Spinning department is worked by two engines, one placed on the east of the works and the other on the West the horse power of one being 110 horses, and of the other 60 horses the average number of hands employed are 982. The ranges of buildings on the south side are used for the Power loom Weaving, there being but one room set apart for that purpose, the rest of the ranges are Storehouses, Warehouses, Mechanics Shop, and a large Calendering Room The weaving consists of Linen damask Hessians &c. chiefly for exportation to America [continued on page 28] |
