Crawford's Plan of Dundee 1776 Dr. Small's Statisl. Acct. [Statistical Account] Mr. J Thomson Small's Wynd Mr. P. David Builder Hilltown |
054 | [Situation] Between Dudhope Street and Ladywell Lane. Mr. P. David who built the reservoir in 1827 immediately to the South of the supposed site of St Mary's Chapel says the only indication of any building having existed near this spot was the springing of an arch about 4 ft [feet] above what had, (he supposed), formerly been the surface of the ground which was brought to light in making some alterations to the East of the site as marked upon Crawford's Map of Dundee. This occurred when Mr D. was a very young man probably no more than 16 years of age, he is now 73, has known the spot from boyhood & never heard of or seen any remains of any portion of this Chapel but has always heard it assigned as the supposed site of the Old Chapel. This account is corroborated by the oldest and most intelligent inhabitants in the vicinity. |
