Colonel Sir H. James Bart.
&c &c
Southampton
Sir
I have to acknowledge your favour of 9 Inst [Instant] informing me that
the word "Irvingite" shall be expunged from the Ordnance plans of Dundee. Had
the communication merely contained this assurance I shd [should] have supposed no
other change was practicable, & have felt obliged. But the letter goes on to say
"The name 'Catholic & Apostolic Church' appears to me to be very inappropriate"
I beg to state that this title has been formally accepted by the Officers of Her
Majesty's Government charged with the publication of the census of 1851, and
was officially given to the Officers employed to make the survey, and I do
not believe that any alteration of such information will be sanctioned.
If you call for the production of the Drawings taken by the Sappers & Miners
you will find that the name was entered as "Catholic & Apostolic Church", &
has since been changed. Now I submit to you, if it is for the honour
of the Department under your charge that such a change should have
been made. I trust you will, at least, let the word "Church" be
engraved, & not "Chapel" as proposed, which is decidedly an
erroneous designation. Waiting your reply
I am
Sir
Your most obt. sevt [obedient servant]
John Rankin
