"Cortachy or Quartachie, may be derived from the Gaelic word "qhuartaich", which signifies enclosed or surrounded. The name is descriptive of the parish in reference to the Church and Castle, as they are situated in a small valley surrounded by rising grounds. The origin of the name Clova, anciently written Clovay, is unknown. Cortachy & Clova at one time separe [separate] parishes were united in 1608. The parish is bounded on the north by the parish of Glenmuck, Tulloch & Glengairden: on the north-west by the parish of Crathie & Braemar in Aberdeenshire; and Kirriemuir (Northern division): on the East by the parishes of Lethnot & Navar, Lochlee and Tannadice: and on the South by the parishes of Kingoldrum & Kirriemuir (Southern division)

[continued from page 1]
"The general appearance of the parish is mountainous, on the South-east of Cortachy the surface is greatly diversified. This portion of the parish is composed partly of level, but for the greater part of rising grounds, - the latter forming the commencement of one of the ranges of the Grampian Mountains, decline on the South and South-west to the River Prosen, and on the East & on the east & north-east to the River South Esk. The above mountain-range extends in an irregular form nearly the whole length of the parish, forming its boundary on the south-west. Opposite to this is a similar range of mountains, but in general of greater elevation: extending the whole length of the united parish, & forming its boundary in the north-east.
There is no portion of this parish detached, nor is there any portion of any other parish contained within the boundary of this Ph. [Parish] |

The Remains of this old Castle, or Keep, consists of a Circular Wall about twenty feet high; it is about four feet thick and from the marks yet traceable on the Interior of the Wall it was evidently a Staircase. It is said to have been erected about the 15th. century.

Castle of Clova [note]
"The boundary of the old garden" (of the house of Clova
a residence of the Lords of Clova & Cortachy) "is yet traceable, but
the foundations of the house are completely erased. Not so with those of the previous Castle or
Peel, which is still a prominent & imposing object, situated on the west side of Benread (a comp:
aritively smooth or tame mountain as the name implies), which rises to the north of the Millton
The Peel commands an extensive and delightful view of the Glen & consists of a fragment about 20 feet high
with walls fully four feet thick. It is traditionally attributed to the time of the Lindsays, and the occupant, says the same authority, having rendered himself obnoxious
to his brother barons, a party marched against him under night and set his castle on fire"

This name applies to the first top of the ridge between the East & West Burn of Glenmoye & is known only by this name "Badhappies" which appears on the Estate Map, is considered by the proprietor to be the old name (which probably has been lost sight of in the locality) and he is desirous that the popular name, as well as that given on the Plan, should appear on the Ordnance Maps. Other names in Glenmoye similarly changed, or different in usage from the Estate Map are adopted upon the Earl of Airlie's authority in the double form. |

This name is understood to apply from the point of junction to the Ph. [Parish] Boundary north & bounded East by the Water-shed of Toardy Hill to Craig Mou & Auld Darkney. On the west the hills of Finbracks, Manawee & Craigthran bound the Glen. No person applies the Glen name farther south than Hindhaugh, where it expands. The E. [East] & W. [West] Burns of Glenmoye change to the Burn of Kinrive or Glenmoye from the point below the Shank. |

A large park enclosed with a dyke having a few ruins near its centre. These ruins are not higher than two or three feet above the foundations. At one time there were (as stated by the personal Authorities) some 30 or 40 habitations here, including a Public House. The name is adopted on the Exn. [Examination] trace as it appears or applied on the Estate Plan & being one of the oldest & best known places in the Glen it should not be list [lost] sight of. |

A farm steading on the east of the Burn of that name. The old name of this place was Dillafrockart which appears on the Estate Map, a name not known now, nor desired on the proprietor's part nor any other person concerned to be perpetuated in this case as it is a farm. The orthography as adopted by the late agent is the most popular, but Lord Airlie adheres to the spelling upon his Estate Map. |

For the heads of this stream see the East & West Burns of Glenmoye & see Glen Moye (Sheet 18 trace 13). All personal authorities referred to call this the "Burn of Kinrive" (pronounced "Kinroe") and even the proprietor recognises it, from shooting in the glen by the popular name of "Kinroe". The name is applied on the Traces as it is understood in the locality - from about "Hindhaugh" or the junction of the East & West Burns of Glenmoye. 25.1. The proprietor considers, under the circumstances, that the name it is generally known by and the name given in the old documents of the Estate (the Plans) should be retained. The description of the Marches made for the Ord. [Ordnance] Survey, which is correct in other places, is considered a good & a safe authority for retaining
