A parish in the south-east of Forfarshire bounded on the west and north by Monikie parish on the north &. north-east by Panbride parish. On the east by the German Ocean and on the south by the frith of Tay. The coast is flat and sandy but a high verdant bank which seems to have formed the coast line in this quarter extends from N E. [North East] to S W. [South West] so as to give to the northern division of the parish the appearance of a terrace elevated about 50 feet above the southern division. This parish is in the presbytery of Arbroath and Synod of Angus and Mearns. Patron the Crown. |

STONE COFFIN OR KISTVAEN (Found Here) [Woodhill] |
Stone Coffin Human bones and an Urn found 1857 |
Alexander Hay Milnes Esq:
Mr. David Young, Woodhill |
051 |
[Situation] 11 Chains W. by N. [West by North] of Woodhill
In May 1857, Mr David Young, the farmer of Woodhill, when ploughing at the place marked X on trace, discovered some ancient remains. The plough stuck in a flag when ploughing deep. On clearing this flag, beneath were a few stones (five or six) arranged symmetrically, and below these, and at a depth of about 6 ft. [feet] from the surface of the ground, was found another flag - the Cover of a Coffin. The sides of the Coffin were of unhewn rough pavement; it had no bottom, and was composed of five flags (length 40 in [inches], breadth 25 in [inches], depth 20 in [inches]) laid N.W [North West] and SE [South East] by compass. A skull was in the centre of the Coffin, and the remaining bones on each side, all much decayed, but presenting no traces of burning. In the S.W. [South West] Corner was an Urn, half filled with a black looking earth, on removing which, being handled carelessly, the Urn was cracked. The bones and the Coffin were closed up, as they were found, and the Urn is in the possession of Alexander Hay Milnes, Esq, of Woodhill Ho. [House] These remains are supposed to belong to the earliest period.
The place excavated is marked in the field by a standing flag, about 3 ft. [feet] high. |

Mr. Kidd the farmer at Grange
of Barry farm house, whom I
saw today, is of opinion that
the object beside his house which
I have shaded on trace and written
"Mound" to, is not artificial. He
thinks it is a small natural hill
which being close to the house, the former
proprietors, for ornamentation, might
have evened the sides and flattened
the top, so that now on the west
& south sides it is apparently
artificial - on the east side
& heath on the north it has the
appearance of being natural -
He agrees with Mr. Proctor in his views
on the matter - see late remarks -

About 2 years ago Mr. Airth, farmer, when clearing away a small mound at the plan marked on trace discovered a great many human bones, skulls &c., and also a few small flags which had apparently been used as rude stone Coffins. Mr. Proctor, Schoolmaster, inspected the skulls, and found them in every Case to be those of full grown male persons, and from the fact of a battle having been fought in the neighbourhood, he is of opinion, that a party of Danes when flying from the enemy must have been overtaken and slain near to this spot - |

28th. Decr. [December] 1857
Parish of Barry
Sheet 51 No. 15 Trace 1
In the Descriptive Remarks
of the object noticed on
trace, & written, "Human bones
found here" it is stated that
"about 2 years ago Mr. Airth
farmer when clearing away a
small mound", &c, "discovered
a great many human bones" &c. &c.
Now it appears evident
from the fact of a mound
being here cleared away
that the object was a
"tumulus" and therefore
"Site of Tumulus" ought
to have been written on
trace and entered in
Name Sheets instead of
the phraseology "Human
bones found here" as the
designation tumulus would
imply the purpose it was
used for -
Was the mound large
which had been removed?
Was it artificial, or trowelled
earth?
Perhaps it was only a
natural hillock, as ancient
stone Coffins are sometimes
found in Knolls or hillocks?
Enquiry to be made

Sir,
"Site of Tumulus" now
written on trace - authorities
the same. Perhaps the N [Name] Sheet
in office written for this object will
still be useful, if the further
information given below be added
to what I have written -
About 40 ft. [feet] long. 7 ft. [feet] high in some parts and
about 10 ft. [feet] wide at the base -
was artificial. Mr. Proctor
considers it to have been a
mound thrown up at the time
the bodies were buried.

[Situation] On the Site of Canoustie village
This battle is mentioned in history as having been fought between the Scotch and Danish about the year 1010. A large number of skeletons and stone coffins have been dug up in Carnoustie when excavating for building purposes, and are supposed to have been the remains of those who fell in battle. The authorities supplied suppose this battle to have been fought where the village is now situated, and with their approval, the words "Supposed Site of Battle &c" are written on trace along the southern part of the village extending over the several localities in which the remains referred to above have been found. The fighting, however, from the accounts given in the Scottish chronicle and other histories, appears to have ranged over a considerable extent of Country. From the South Side of Barry parish, up along its eastern boundary, and as far north as Camustane Hill in Monikie parish, where a stone cross marks the spot where the Danish General Camus was Slain.

Supposed Site of BATTLE between the Scots and Danes 1010 [Carnoustie] (Continued) |
|
|
|
[continued from page 51]
From the death of Alpin we find nothing remarkable occurring in which Dundee was concerned untill the year 1010 when Malcolm II defeated the Danes under Camus their general at Barrie or Carnoustie, about 10 miles to the eastward of the town. Not long before this Malcolm had overthrown the Danes with great slaughter at Mortlach in Aberdeenshire which untoward event being related to Sweyn King of Denmark instead of deterring him from any farther attempt on Scotland encouraged him; the rather that having recently reduced England he was determined to reduce Scotland also. For this purpose he fitted out two fleets one in Norway the other in England and placed both under the command one of the ablest of his officers - Disappointed in effecting a landing in the Firth Camus bore away northwards and anchoring in Lunan Bay landed his troops in the vicinity of the Red Head a few miles beyond Arbroath. Proceeding to Brechin he laid siege to the Castle but not being able to reduce it, in the true Spirit of northern barbarism he set fire to the town and church and reduced them to ashes. Leaving this scene of blazing desolation he proceeded across the country towards Balbride or Panbride on the west - plundering and burning every place in his route among which tradition says was the church of Aberelliot or Arbirlot. Pitching his Camp at Carnoustie he waited the approach of Malcolm who he learned was approaching with his army from Dundee where he had rested a few days. Malcolm took up his position at Barrie in front of and about a mile distant from the lines of the invaders. Both armies prepared for battle - a battle of the highest moment to Scotland as upon the issue of it her fate depended. Effectually to arouse the Danish Soldiers it is said that on disembarkation at Lunan Bay Camus destroyed or sent away his ships thus showing his army that they were to rely wholly upon their swords. The morning of the day of battle at length dawned and the Danes confidently expected to gain the victory but instead of Scotland becoming a feudatory or dependent of the Danish Crown, victory sat on the helmet of her monarch -

and hurled defeat and overwhelming disgrace upon the arms of the north. The Danish lines were broken and complete disarray disorganization confusion and flight were the results. Camus himself was overtaken and slain on the summit of the heights near Monikie where a tumulus received his remains and a stone Cross sculptured with rude figures was erected which still points out the spot. Cairns were heaped over the gathered bodies of those who fell in the low plain whence the name Carnoustie - the Cairn or Tomb of the Host - is derived.
Malcolm improving his pursued the flying Danes and overtaking them at Aberlemno gave them a second overthrow and erected Commemorative memorials of his victory which with several tumuli are still existing. The shattered remains of these two battles still pursuing their route northwards were followed by Malcolm breathing nothing but destruction and finally put the Sword in a third battle at Cruden in Aberdeenshire which name is an abbreviation of Cruor Danorum that is the blood of the Danes and was so called by the Ecclesiastical writers of the time. [Situation] Consists of the Southern portion of Barry parish
This name applies to all the lands in Barry parish situated south of the Railway, and which extend from Buddon Burn on the West to the High Water line on the east. A few years ago Barry Links were wholly rough pasture land, but lately small tracts have been reclaimed, and plantations formed. They are studded with mud houses, having each a few acres of land attached, feud to poor people. These houses Lord Panmure intends to have removed. Two lighthouses have been erected on these links, and on their eastern side is a large sand hill which is very conspicuous. The name "Barry Links" is extensively known, though often called "Links of Barry" |

[Situation] In the southern portion of Barry parish near the sea shore
A sand hill 105 feet high, situated on the eastern coast of Barry Parish. It is a conspicuous and well known object. There is a tradition, that after the defeat of the danes by Malcolm II, many of their vessels on the way home foundered here, and that the sands accumulating over the wrecks through time formed this hill. |

[Situation] In the southern end of Barry parish adjoining the sea shore
A large space of rough sandy ground, of which the Gaa Sand Hill forms the centre, situated close to the NE [North East] corner of Barry Parish. The name, as given here, is not generally known among the people of the parish, but I find it marked on the several charts, and the Harbour master at Dundee and Mr. Waugh, Factor, are familiar with the name. |
