[situation] In the S E [South East] end of the Co. [County] Forfar
A parish in the County of Forfar. It is about 4 miles in length, and 3 in breadth, and is bounded on the north by St Vigeans and Arbroath, on the East by part of Arbroath and the Sea, on the South by part of St Vigeans and Panbride, on the West, by Carmyllie and Panbride. The extent of Sea Coast is about 3 miles, for the most part flat and sandy. The greater part of the parish is gently undulated, yet the hills are neither very high nor rocky, but are in general green and capable of cultivation. The Water of Elliot which runs through this parish from north to South has its source in the parish of Carmyllie, about 3 miles from the Town of Arbirlot. It was once noted for trouts of a peculiar relish This parish is in the presbytry of Arbroath and synod of Angus and Mearns. There are no detached portions of other parishes within Arbirlot and there are no detached portions of Arbirlot. |

[Situation] Crossing Kelly Moor.
The track of an old path or road through the muir at the north end of this parish, said to have been formed by Hector Boethius the Scottish Historian. This track was pounted out by Mr. Mathew, Wright, Bonnington, who has been many years in the locality, and posseses a good knowledge of the ground. It commences at an old road South of the Rottenraw Burn, and extends northwards through Kellymuir, terminating at the parish boundary, a short distance east of Hunters Path farm house. The track at its Southern end and along the greater part of its course, is distinct and readily observable, being generally about 12 links wide; but along other parts, its course is not readily detected, near its northern end, it runs for a short distance through arable land, where all marks of the old path are obliterated. The name as supplied, (pronounced Eck-en-bow) is known to the old residenters of the neighbourhood, and parish generally. Hector Boethius, or Boyce, the Scottish historian, referred to above, was born in Dundee in about 1465 and died 1536. |

Sheet 45 No. 16 Trace 3 -- Parish of Arbirlot
[Note]
Although all the authorities above quoted appears to spell
the name with a hyphen yet it is evidently not according
to the general mode of spelling such names - as it is the
name of a path or road tis plain that the word "Path"
should not be joined to the other part of the name.
"It is confidently reported that a road was made
through part of this parish by Hector Boethius the
Scotch historian which still bears his name though
somewhat corrupted. It is called Heckenbois-path."

[Situation] In the eastern portion of the parish.
This baronial castle is Situated on the South bank of the Elliot water, at a distance of about one mile from Arbirlot, and two from Arbroath. It appears to have been at one time a place of considerable Strength. I have not been able, either by the aid of books, or old records, or from information gleaned from parties in the neighbourhood, to fix the date of its erection; though it is conjectured, from its present appearance, and style of architecture, to have been built between 3 and 400 years ago. It bears no appearance of ever having been Surrounded by a moat or ditch, nor is it built in the strict fortalice Style, Similar to the most of Castles or towers So surrounded. Such are the opinions of competent parties whom I have consulted, and who take an interest in Such matters __ This castle, though long unoccupied, and at present in a dilapidated condition, cannot strictly be termed a ruin, as the roof is yet entire.
The barony of Kelly was long possessed by the family of Auchterlony. The Abbot Brydy, of Arbroath, obtained from William Auchterlony, and his Spouse Janet, a charter empowering the convent "to quarry and win Stones, at their pleasure, in any part of the land of Auchterlony, called of old Kelly, under the penalty of 10 marks, Scots, to be annually levied from the lands, and ecclesiastical censure in the event of interruption" This charter is dated 26th. Decbr. [December] 1466, and is followed by a sasine or infiftment of the right granted by the baron to the Abbot, at his Mansion of Auchterlony, [Alias] Kelly, on 13th. Decbr. [December] 1468. It appears from the above, that nearly 400 yrs. [years] ago, there was a mansion at Kelly, but whether it was the present Castle or not, I can get no information to Confirm. -

Kelly Castle (Continued) |
|
046 |
[continued from page 37]
The Castle of Kelly which stands upon a high rock that rises from the bed of the Elliot Water had been at one time a place of considerable strength and is a very ancient building. It is now uninhabited though it cannot be said to be in a state of ruin. Before it came into the possession of the Panmure family it belonged to the Irvines of Drum. These Irvines succeeded a family of the name of Ochterlony and according to tradition it was by one of the Ochterlonies a proprietor of Kelly that the ancient abbey of Arbroath was burned at some period prior to the Reformation.
The only mansion house of note in the parish is the modern house of Kelly which stands near to the old Castle.

Kelly Castle (Continued) |
|
046 |
[continued from page 38]
Neither the period when the Castle of Kelly was built nor the proprietors through a long series of ages can now be traced. Tradition however has handed down a circumstance which deserves notice viz. that one Ouchterlony laird of Kelly was violently active in demolishing the Abbey of Aberbrothock. Nor is it unlikely that he considered every religious fabric as a relict of idolatry. And being remarkable for the activity of his zeal he was appointed by the convention to carry this barbarous deed into execution. To describe at large the beauties of Kelly and do justice to nature's varied charms would require uncommon descriptive powers. The soil does not refuse nourishment to trees of foreign birth. At present there is in the garden a tree called the Dall-hound-holly remarkable for its beauty. Then exposed to the sun and sheltered from the chilly blast it has grown up to full maturity.
