This Parish is bounded on the north by the River South Esk (with the exception of some short portions which belong to the adjoining Parishes of Brechin and Careston), and, on the extreme south by the water of Lunan which separates it from Rescobie. On the east the Parishes of Brechin, Farnell and Guthrie adjoin. The Parish of Oathlaw as well as Rescobie, which also joins the southern Boundary, are upon the west. The only Rivers touching upon the Parish are the South Esk on the north, & the Lunan on the south. The Forfar & Arbroath Railway, now part of the main line of the Scottish north Eastern to which company it is Leased. passes through the Southern part of Aberlemno running almost parallel with the Lunan. There is one Station on this line in the Parish called Auldbar Road. Two lines of Toll Roads pass through the Parish - the Road from Brechin to Auldbar Station, and the Forfar & Montrose Road running east & west, intersecting each other at the Balgavies Toll. A great part of the Muir of Montreathmont, which extends to several of the adjoining Parishes, and which is now a large forest of

firs, belongs to Aberlemmo. The highest part of the Parish is Turin Hill on which there is a Camp said to have been a Roman Camp. The principal Estates are Aldbar. Melgund Turin & Balgavies. There are other small properties. There is a Free Church & a School besides the Parish Ch. [Church] & School, and at the Bog of Pitkennedy and Auldbar Road Station there are other Schools. The principal antiquities are the well known Cross Stones of Aberlemmo. The ruins of Melgund Castle, the Castle of Aldbar and of Flemington besides the remaining arches of the ancient castle of Balgavies are the buildings of antiquity in this Parish. Part of the house of Carsegownie is of an old date, but from the information obtained it does not appear to have been more than a house of the 16th or 17th Century. Stone Coffins & Urns, it is stated in the new Statl. [Statistical] Account, have been found in various parts of the Parish, but the places where the former - the coffins were found have in a few places been found & shewn on the Examination Traces upon authority. |

This River forms the principal part of the Northern Boundary of Aberlemno. It empties itself into the German Ocean at Montrose, passing through Montrose Basin, at the mouth ofwhich there is a fine chain Bridge, or Suspension Bridge. Any references to the River made in the several Acts for Montrose Bridge mention ''River South Esk'', which is consequently considered to be the first & best authority by those who have been asked to authenticate the Name of the River. All the personal authorities quoted admit that in conversation or any reference made to the River in speaking it is always called ''South Esk'' only - due regard being given to the form in which the various authorities use the Name, South Esk or Southesk. It has therefore been adopted on the Examination Traces according to custom.

"It seems not improbable that the Cross Stones of Aberlemno commemorates the defeat of one section of a powerful army, part of the fugitives of which were overtaken & with Camus their leader destroyed near the village of Carnoustie, where Camis Cross still bears the name & commemorates the defeat of the unfortunate chief _ A few hundred yards to the north of the church there is a monumental Stone about 8 feet in height, ornamented on one side with a Cross richly carved, & with two female figures in the garb & attitude of mourning. The other side is sculptured in relievo with men some on horseback & others on foot, intermingled with dogs. Near to this are two smaller stones, which also have been ornamented, but the hand of time has greatly defaced them. One of the most perfect of these is in the Church yard. On one side of this stone there is a curious cross in bold relievo, and entirely covered with flowered ornaments. A stone of a somewhat similar appearance to those already described & from the style of its sculpture, evidently belonging to the same rude era of Scottish art, is at present in the vestibule of the Ho. [House] of Auldbar
New Statl. [Statistical] Account
The stone first described is the southmost of the three near the Crosstown & stands about 10 feet above the surface. The others are almost bare of sculptured traces from age. They stand about about 6 feet above the ground and the three Cross Stones may be taken at about 3 or 3½ feet in breadth. The Cross Stone in the Churchyard is not quite 3 feet above the ground & both it & the highest stone at Crosstown are tolerably perfect in sculptured figures &c. at present time - 1861. |

'' The remains of the Castle of Melgund are still extensive, & indicate no inconsiderable degree of strength & of magnificence''
New Statistical Account.
The ruins of '' Melgund Castle'' are large, the walls standing at present being the entire extent of the building in its original state. None of roofings of the Castle remain. There is a round tower at its north Eastern angle in which there is a winding stone stair. There is also the ruin of a square tower near the centre of the building on the front or north side. The Castle & the Estate of Melgund are the property of the Right Honble [Honourable] the Earl of Minto. - As stated in the New Statistical Account, ''places of sepulture have been found in several parts of the Parish. Cairns of Stones, & rude stone coffins evidently put together in haste, mark in various places the ancient battlefield". At the places marked on the Examination Trace lying to the west of ''Melgund Castle'', Stone Coffins, as stated by Mr Jarron of Mains, & R. Fraser, were dug out about 14 years ago. In the

second field to the west of the Castle at the place marked one Stone Coffin was found, and in the field next the road parts of Stone Coffins (some entire) were found between the marks shewn on the Examination Trace. At Grief Hill (which see) stone coffins and human bones were found but there are no other places known now in the Parish, as far as could be learned, where stone coffins &c. were found, except at the "Moat of Melgund", which however appears not to be certain to those who have spoken of the Moat, they having but heard of Coffins being found there without any reliable information of their authority for such. |

The source of this burn is the ''Hen Well'' (Trace1, 33.10) from which to the Estate & lands of Melgund it is known as the ''River Kaircock''. By some it is considered to apply to the whole of the Burn from its point of rising to the place it joins South Esk. ''Melgund Burn'', which is the name generally given to it from the Mains of Melgund Farm (Traces 4 & 5) to the Farm of Netherton (Trace 5. 33.3), is from being the Estate Name as also the name of the Castle considered to be the oldest & best established name to the part described - i.e. between Netherton & Mains of Melgund. From Netherton to the South Esk this Burn is, like many other streams, identified with the Name of the lands it passes through, and although it is to the River on the Estate of Melgund it would not be prudent to apply it farther than the Traces of this Plan - 33.7. |

In the New Statl: [Statistical] Account it states that ''the house of Carsegownie is another specimen of the same kind of defensive dwelling place though on a smaller scale" (alluding to the neighbouring Castles of Balgavies and Flemington), "and now in a great measure divested of its stronghold appearance by the recent enlargement of its once loophole looking windows. In describing the old house of Carsegownie the New Statl. [Statistical] Account mentions ''the Castle of Flemington, about a furlong to the east of the church, as a more perfect specimen'' (of defence).
The Castle is at present occupied by persons employed on the Farm of Flemington. It is in good condition in the lower part of the building which has vaulted ceilings but the upper part of it, to which a winding stone stairs leads, is in a ruinous condition although the roof still remains almost entire. By the personal authorities it is considered a Castle, as it is always called, but of its age no information has been obtained. |

''About a mile south-east of
'the Church of Aberlemno, in a gravel hillock,
upon the Estate of Pitkennedy, was
lately discovered a rudely constructed
stone coffin containing a clay urn.
Near the urn were scattered a number
of beads composed of jet or camel coal
of which upwards of a hundred were
recovered. With the exception of four
pieces of a square shape, & two of a
triangular form, the rest were oblong,
& pierced laterally, the square pieces being
each pierced with four holes & in the same
way, but the triangular bits were pierced
obliquely. The square & triangular
pieces are variegated on one side by
a dotted ornament resembling a lace
pattern, very much the same as those
found in a barrow near Assynt, in
Ross-shire, only that the spots of those,
unlike the ones found at Pitkennedy,
were said to have been studded with
gold. The Pitkennedy necklace is
probably the most complete hitherto
found in Scotland, & is in the possess:

proprietor."-

Mr. Henderson Tenant of Woodwrae
Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Myles Ph. [Parish] Minister |
033 |
"The first recorded Lindsay of ** Woodwrae or Woodwrayth, (which was was previously held by a family of the name of Wellem or Volume, who paid tiends to the Priory of Restinoth) was Sir John, a son of the 10th Earl of Crawford, and also proprietor of Balinshoe. His 'Castle' of Woodwray, which was in the immediate vicinity of that of Finhaven, stood a a little to the east of the farm house, and was only removed about 30 years ago, but with the exception of the Old Dove Cot nothing of an independent feudal character is now traceable on the property. In clearing out the foundations of this 'Castle' two sculptured stones were found about six feet in height, and similar to those at Aberlemno, but were removed from the locality & sent to decorate the grounds of the late great unknown at Abbotsford. - The 'Grave Hill' a little to the south east (?) of the site of the Castle, is a curious prehistoric remain similar to those of Fernybank and Colmeallie, in Glenesk, being composed of a ring of rude Stones about a foot in size, surrounding a pit of black earth, from which pieces of old warlike weapons and burned bones & charcoal have been gathered"
Land of the Lindsays
The ruins of the Castle of Woodwrae were pulled down & cleared away by the present tenant of Woodwrae farm about 30 years ago, and the site, as represented within the dotted lines, was pointed out by this person - Mr. Henderson. Of the old Dove Cot, Mr. Henderson says it is certainly a building in connexion with the time of the Castle. When he came to the farm about 50 years ago it was nearly in Ruins, but he repaired it, since which it has an appearance more modern than it really is. The Revd. [Reverend] Mr Myles confirms Mr Hendersons account. |

Site of Cairn (Stone Cist found) |
|
033 |
Respecting the "ring of rude stones" on "Grave Hill" (the Site of the Cairn, which is adopted upon the same authorities) Mr. Henderson states it to have been a Cairn of rude stones, chiefly irregular boulder stones, covering black earth from which charcoal &c. have been gathered. There is no pit or hollow to be seen at the place now. It is covered with a thick growth of broom & whins. Some hundred Carts loads of stones have been taken out of the Cairn by the tenant to build dykes &c.

A Farm Steading on Turin Estate, the property of P. W. Carnegie of Turin. Custom in this Parish cannot be said to adopt one of the forms of the name as given in the column of "various modes" &c., for it is commonly used as "Hill of Turin" by the people. The best authorities are in favour of North Mains &c., and when it is considered that there are on the same Estate, but in Rescobie Parish, the West Mains, & the "South Mains of Turin", it will be seen that "North" is to be preferred to "Upper", which latter from the Co. [County] Map appears to be oldest.
Besides North or Upper Mains of Turin there is in this Parish "Nether Turin", which in some measure rules Upper as well as the West & South Mains, in Rescobie, rule for North. "Upper or North Mains" is adopted on the Examination Trace. |

Sometimes these are called "Cotton of Pitkennedy" a name improper both as to propriety as well as "Muir of Pitkennedy" being recognised where the other designation would not. Cotton, signifying the Cotter's houses of the Farm, is altogether misapplied when given to these houses, which hold directly off the Pr. [Proprietor] not off the Farm. Persons are found who at once recognise "Muir of Pitkennedy", but who say they are not acquainted with the "Cotton of Pitkennedy". |

The remains of the Castle stand in a small plantation to the north-west of Balgavies. What remains is the foundation wall nearly level with the surface below or level with which there are two arches remaining of the vaulted apartments or cellars below the building. - The Castle is well known & particularly mentioned in History in the time of Sir. W. Lindsay of Balgavies. As mentioned in Tytler's History it was destroyed by order of James VI in the course of his expedition to the north against the Catholic Nobles in the year 1593. In olden times it was called "Bagays". Vide The Lives of the Lindsays by Lord Lindsay. |
