The source of this burn is the ''Hen Well'' (Trace1, 33.10) from which to the Estate & lands of Melgund it is known as the ''River Kaircock''. By some it is considered to apply to the whole of the Burn from its point of rising to the place it joins South Esk. ''Melgund Burn'', which is the name generally given to it from the Mains of Melgund Farm (Traces 4 & 5) to the Farm of Netherton (Trace 5. 33.3), is from being the Estate Name as also the name of the Castle considered to be the oldest & best established name to the part described - i.e. between Netherton & Mains of Melgund. From Netherton to the South Esk this Burn is, like many other streams, identified with the Name of the lands it passes through, and although it is to the River on the Estate of Melgund it would not be prudent to apply it farther than the Traces of this Plan - 33.7.
