Aldbar Castle (Continued 033 [continued from page 11]
The modern portion of Aldbar Castle is that part on the south west looking towards the terrace front and flower garden. This wing or addition is separated from the ancient part of the building by a line through it on the Examination Trace. The actual date of the Castle is not known and the farthest records of its age which can be traced, as stated by Mr. Chalmers, refer to the 13th or 14th centuries, but it is considered to be older, particularly the Castle or Stronghold part of it looks to the east, but now & for a considerable time surrounded almost with additions of supposed various dates. The Spelling of the Name was recently altered by a former proprietor from Auldbar to Aldbar which is still adopted on the property by the present proprietor who adheres to it in all documents but where the Name is taken from the Estate as in the case of the Auldbar Railway Station Mile Posts & Guide Posts (None of the latter in this Parish) it is still used in the old Form of Auldbar. (See M. [Mile] Posts, Railway Station, Aldbar Chapel and Port of Aldbar."
